VIDEO: “Halftime in America: Chrysler Ad Parody”

Posted 07 Feb 2012 in bailouts, economy, humor

You’ve probably already seen Chrysler’s Super Bowl ad featuring Clint Eastwood’s gruff voiceover and emotion-soaked film of Americana. But to many, including yours truly, it came across as a veiled defense of President Obama’s auto industry bailout. Reason TV has created a parody which gets to the heart of the matter. (transcript below)

It’s halftime.

Both teams are listening to a Madonna performance that sounds eerily similar to a Lady Gaga song they’ll hear 10 years from now.

It’s halftime in America too.

People are out of work and they’re hurting. And they’re wondering where all their money went.

Well, $12.5 billion of it went to Chrysler. In the form of a bailout. But it’s okay, because Chrysler is all-American.

Though technically 58.5% of Chrysler is owned by an Italian corporation. And Chrysler manufactures many of it’s vehicles in Canada. And Mexico. But I guess that doesn’t make for a great commercial. Unlike polar bears. Or dogs. Or that digestive yogurt.

What happened to freedom? What happened to choice?Yeah, Americans are hurting. And their dollars are being used to bail out the chosen ones. Instead of themselves.

Yeah.

We need to guard them like Ben Roethlisberger’s friend guards a bathroom door.

Allegedly.

RELATED: Daisy from Chicks On The Right completely nailed what has been bothering me about the Eastwood commercial…

I was sort of disgusted by the ad….the sentiment? Yes, it was slightly moving. They mis-managed their business, got a freakin’ bailout and then say that we all “pulled together?” No. We did not. No one is pulling together for me and my family while I’m shelling out 30% more for groceries every month. No one is pulling together for me when I’m at the gas tank about ready to cry. […] It’s going to take more than a Hollywood-esque commercial to convince me that getting a bailout and not paying your taxes is somehow “resilient” and indicative of a free-market America.
