Cain denies accusations, refuses to quit: “It ain’t gonna happen.”
I’m really growing weary of the amount of attention being focused on Herman Cain’s accusers despite their absence of credible evidence. The disparity between their lack of proof and the amount of their coverage in the mainstream media is staggering. And this non-story is eclipsing other news stories which deserve far more publicity than they are being given.
For instance, did you realize that Obama’s Chief of Staff William Daley has been demoted? You probably haven’t heard much, if anything, about the turmoil within Team Obama that led to his defenestration.
Did you hear that there is credible evidence that Iran is now developing nuclear weapons, and that they have sought to miniaturize a Pakistani nuclear weapon design to fit on Iranian ballistic missiles?
You might have heard those stories if you really paid attention to multiple newscasts and media outlets. But it’s much more likely that you know all about Gloria Allred’s press conference media circus where she beclowned her case by referring to Herman Cain’s genitals as his “stimulus package.”
I chalk up this imbalance in media coverage to the fact that, in just the past few months, Cain has gone from being a non-candidate who supposedly had no chance of winning, to actually leading Mitt Romney in the polls. Doubtless there are some within the GOP who are nervous that this political neophyte — and business tychoon — could defeat their candidate of choice. But it’s the Democrat Party who must be really quaking in their boots, terrified of the notion that a successful and genuinely likeable black Republican could emerge to threaten President Obama’s chances for reelection. If America has several months to compare the credentials of Cain to the failures of Obama, it won’t go well for Dear Leader. And the elimination of the Democrat Party’s race card will be devastating to their core constituency.
To the defenders of the status quo, Herman Cain must be eliminated at all costs. And since he’s been steadily increasing in popularity, Cain’s enemies on both sides of the political establishment have dug up some stale, unsubstantiated innuendo against which there can be little defense. The media sharks smell blood in the water and have been in a frenzy.
Rather than hide behind spokespeople, Herman Cain has personally stepped up to forcefully and categorically deny the accusations being leveled against him. [emphasis added below — FMP]
I am Herman Cain and I am running for president of the United States of America. I normally don’t have notes but in this case I wanted to make sure that I didn’t miss any points that I needed to cover today. Secondly, I chose to address these accusations directly rather than try to do it through a series of continuous statements. Or spokespeople. Because that’s the person Herman Cain is… to take my message directly to the people.
With respect to the most recent accusation – I have never acted inappropriately with anyone. Period. I saw Ms. Allred and her client yesterday in that news conference for the very first time. As I sat in my hotel room with a couple of staff members, when they got to the microphone, my first reaction was, I don’t even know who this woman is. Secondly, I didn’t recognise the name at all. The time she referenced was during the time that I was CEO and president of the National Restaurant Association. It’s headquartered in Washington, DC where about 150 workers work and we have about 150 people in Chicago, where she said she worked for our educational foundation.
I tried to remember if I recognised her, and I didn’t. I tried to remember if I remembered that name, and I didn’t. The charges and the accusations, I absolutely reject. They simply didn’t happen. They simply did not happen.
You know, for decades the American people have wanted a businessman in the White House and not just another politician, because for decades all the politicians have been doing is just kicking a can down the road… trim a little bit here, trim a little bit there, when America’s biggest problems simply got worse.
Well, a businessman man by the name of Herman Cain stepped forward. Here I am. I know from the American people I have talked with and I have spoken with over the past several months, we are not going to allow Washington to deny me the opportunity to represent this great nation. And as far as these accusations trying to get me to back off and maybe withdraw from this presidential primary race – it ain’t gonna happen. Because I’m doing this for the American people, and for the children and their grandchildren. And I will not be deterred by false, anonymous, incorrect accusations.
America believes Washington is broken. America believes our system of getting elected is broken. In part it is, but in another part it’s not. As long as we have decency and honesty in the electoral process, it will work. But when we allow deceit and false accusations to rule the day and distract us, that part is broken.
Nine days ago, the media started to beat me up, covering anonymous accusers. And then yesterday, another accuser came forth and identified herself, went on TV and made some other accusations. Was it tough last week? Yes. Has it been tough the last couple of days? Yes. But you see, that’s one thing about Herman Cain that I think a lot of the American people know, and that is just because it’s tough is no reason for me not to do what I feel like I have to do. And because of what the American people have said to me through these turbulent times, we will get through this. We will get through this.
The fact is, these anonymous allegations are false. And now the Democrat machine in America has brought forth a troubled woman to make false accusations, statements, many of which exceed common sense, and they certainly the standards of decency in America.
I have been married for 43 years to my wife, Gloria. 43 years I’ve been married to my wife. After watching that press conference yesterday, I called her and said, ‘Sweetheart did you see it?’ She said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘What did you think?’ And my wife said, and this is a direct quote, ‘I have known you for 46 years, because we were engaged for two years, that doesn’t even sound like anything you would ever do to anyone.’
Sexual harassment accusations are serious. And respect for women, and all people that I have worked with, or people that have worked for me over the years, has been a top priority with respect to me.
Now, my family fully supports my candidacy and they know the man that I am. However, I ask that the media not drag my family into this. They’re not running for president. Some members of your profession have even stalked my family members, calling members of my family and extended family members. I ask you as professsionals to direct your question, your criticism towards me. Not my family.
My reputation is something that I’ve worked over 40 years to build up. I’ve managed many entities, many companies. I’ve managed organizations with thousands and thousands of employees, and now that I’m running for the highest office in the land, and accusation after accusation — some anonymous, some not-so-anonymous — are now coming to light. This is not a surprise. It was expected. But I will vigorously defend my reputation because I will not allow false accusations to compromise or in any way shed badly on my character and my integrity. And this is why I’ve decided to address these issues directly and forthrightly.
I will repeat: I have never acted inappropriately with anyone, period. And these accusations, that were revealed yesterday, simply did not happen.
After the initial paroxysm in the media, some unusual facts are coming to light about Cain’s accusers that shed some doubt about the validity of their charges. One of the women has a history of lodging complaints of sexual harassment, and just so happens to work in the Obama administration. Sharon Bialek, the other woman to publicly come forward and level accusations against Cain, enlisted the support of opportunistic attorney Gloria Allred, and just so happens to have lived in the same Chicago apartment building as Obama’s chief campaign strategist David Axelrod. Neither woman has offered a shred of proof to support their claims.
Successful executives of Mr. Cain’s caliber are frequently targeted by people looking for a payoff. Unless and until these woman can produce credible evidence of harassment or other misconduct by Cain, I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Mahatma Gandhi is quoted to have said, “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” Judging by the media’s behavior, Mr. Cain is currently in phase three of Gandhi’s aphorism.

UPDATE: In tonight’s debate on CNBC, Herman Cain was asked about the accusations against him. The audience applauded and cheered after hearing what he had to say about the allegations and his character.

RELATED: Even Ace, who is certainly no Herman Cain fan, now offers his apology for not being more skeptical and details why this Karen Kraushaar woman is not credible at all.
She tried to get a ridiculous amount of money out of the INS — plus a pricey paid year off and paid tuition at grad school! — over a vague complaint of “unfair treatment.” Because she wasn’t permitted to work from home — how many people are? or were, especially, in 2002 or whenever?
…Given this history — attempting to blackmail a payoff out of a government agency over a silly email forward — I’m categorizing her as a False Accuser.
RELATED: Victor Davis Hanson has written an outstanding op-ed regarding these insubstantial attacks on Herman Cain, wherein he deconstructs the lack of proof against the GOP front-runner and gets to the heart of why the Democrat Party is so afraid of him.
Both supporters and detractors agree that Cain should know by now that alleged misdemeanors by Republican frontrunners are always more serious than known transgressions by Democratic rivals. All true — and all irrelevant in the age of liberal indulgence and exemption where noble ends sometimes must justify tawdry means. Yet it is not quite clear whether Cain is supposedly guilty of attempted, fantasized, or foiled womanizing of the sort that Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich have confessed to actualizing. Or is he just a little creepy, in the manner of Al Gore and his masseuses, or the late Strom Thurmond and his wandering hands, or the late Ted Kennedy and his late-hours frolicking?
Note there is no exemption for Cain even though the charges date from over a decade ago, and even though Cain in the interval was given a 30 percent chance of survival from stage-IV metastasized colon cancer. Cain’s opponents in the media (and perhaps in other campaigns) either wish to portray him as a serial harasser and clumsy denier, or to keep him so busy denying that he has no time to campaign — or both. For Cain, who at first seemed blindsided and defensive, the hysteria must seem like yet another round of toxic chemotherapy. Oddly, so far no African American spokesman has stepped forward to “contextualize” the charges in the long history of sexually charged stereotyped slurs about supposedly undisciplined ascendant black males.

Excellent post.
The TP folks should circle the wagons for Cain. Anyone paying any attention at all will recognize this as the character assasination that it is. Sadly, many Americans have a five second attention span and cannot busy themselves with details.
