Who REALLY raised the debt ceiling?
During the contentious debt ceiling negotiations, I’ve been hearing a lot of smack talk from Democrats (and our Campaigner-In-Chief, especially) saying that Reagan and Bush raised the debt ceiling, so it’s wrong for Republicans to oppose raising it now.
Gee, for a guy who was elected based on “change,” Obama sure is comfortable with the status quo when it suits him.
If we’re gonna get snippy about whom to blame rather than doing what’s right for the country right now, then let’s take a look at who actually raised the debt ceiling the most in the past 30+ years.
The chart above, from The Washington Post, had erroneously put the Republicans in charge of the House during the Reagan and Bush administrations. In actuality, the Democrats controlled the House of Representatives for 46 years, from 1949 to 1995 (c’mon, WaPo, ever heard of fact checking?) I’ve adjusted the graph accordingly to give a more accurate picture of who has controlled the pursestrings in Congress and who’s been in charge when there has been a vote to raise the debt ceiling.
Since 1980, the debt ceiling has been raised 39 times. It was raised 17 times under Ronald Reagan, four times under Bill Clinton and seven times under George W. Bush. Congress is currently in a contentious debate with the White House on whether to raise the ceiling by the Aug. 2 deadline, which would make the fourth raise under Obama.
Even when in control of both branches of government, Republicans haven’t reduced spending since 1945. So it’s WAY past time that they finally make good on some fiscal responsibility. The elections of 2010 were a clear message from the Tea Party voters to their candidates of choice: get in there and stop the madness!
We’ve got to stop arguing about who got us into this mess; both parties did, and that fact gets us nowhere. What’s important is to come up with workable solutions to get us OUT of debt, or at least turn us in the direction to stabilize our economy rather than continue to explode it.
As Will Rogers said, “When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.”
UPDATE: The WaPo article linked above was updated with a corrected graphic shortly after I published this post and linked it on their Google+ page. You’re welcome, WaPo.

Reasonable criticism of the shortcomings of the Republicans, but, those very shortcomings Democrats consider attributes and they only criticize spending to discourage the Republican voter base.
