Weiner pulls out [UPDATED: Resignation press conference video added]

It now appears the New York congressman’s member proved too big for fellow Democrats to circle their wagons around. ABC News is announcing that Democrat Anthony Weiner will resign from Congress:
Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York plans to leave office, calling House leaders Wednesday night at a White House picnic to inform them he would resign today, sources tell ABC News.
Weiner’s decision comes after days of mounting pressure from congressional Democrats following his embarrassing admission of risque online chats and photo swaps with multiple women after first denying it.
Weiner, 46, has begun sharing his decision with close friends, the sources said, but has yet to send a formal letter to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo or House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, indicating his intentions.
A Democratic source said Weiner called House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Wednesday night at the picnic.
I’m sure Weiner’s decision to resign has a lot to do with the fact that he’s finally had time to meet with his pregnant wife, Huma Abedin, who has spent the past week out of the country with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. That, and the fact that it has come to light last week that he had been communicating privately with a 17-year-old high school junior.
For some bonus schadenfreude, here’s hard-Left apologist Alan Colmes melting down after it was announced that the penis-tweeting liar would resign.
But it’s PBS’ Mark Shields who gets the soundbite of the day: (h/t: Newsbusters)
“what the hell is a member of Congress, who wants to be mayor of New York, having portrait galleries of his crotch available for distribution?”

UPDATE: As might be expected, Weiner’s resignation press conference quickly became a circus.
His wife, Huma, was not present. When he said, “Today I’m announcing my resignation from Congress,” some in the crowd erupted in applause. Others began jeering and catcalling, shouting insults like “Were you more than 7 inches?” and “Bye-bye, pervert!” (probably the same heckler from the Howard Stern Show, writer Benjy Bronk, who crashed Weiner’s first presser).
Even after all this scandal, Weiner still doesn’t get it. He dragged his parents into his speech — “I’d like to thank my parents for instilling values in me.”
And with that, the Congressional Creeper finally resigns. Good riddance!
