Obama’s Defense Spending Priorities: $400 billion LESS for military

Thanks to President Obama’s overzealous support for Muslim revolutions, U.S. troops are now fighting in three wars. Yet Obama says our soldiers must do MORE with LESS, proposing a $400 billion spending cut. (via Heritage.org)

  • The Obama administration has requested that Congress provide $553 billion for the Defense Department’s base budget in FY 2012—$13 billion less than what the administration had projected requesting a year earlier.
  • President Obama’s deficit reduction plan calls for $400 billion in cuts to national security spending over the next 12 years. This is in addition to the approximately $400 billion already cut by the administration during the previous two years.
  • The baseline defense budget is now 3.5% of America’s GDP, a figure well below the post-World War II average of 7.5%. If the Obama administration succeeds in its plans to cut defense further, that percentage will drop to 3% or lower—the lowest total in the entire post-World War II era.

Of the $400 billion in national security cuts, only $100 billion comes from efficiency initiatives and bureaucratic reforms at the Pentagon. The remaining $300 billion will come from the delay or cancellation of over 50 major weapons programs.

The list of defense cuts includes a combat search and rescue helicopter, the F-22 fifth generation fighter, the Army’s future combat systems (primarily a ground vehicle program), the multiple-kill vehicle for missile defense, a bomber for the Air Force, the VH-71 presidential helicopter, a transformational satellite program, and the second airborne laser aircraft. In addition, the Administration decided to extend the construction of an aircraft carrier by an extra year from four to five, reduce the number of ground-based midcourse defense interceptors from 44 to 30, and indefinitely delay the Navy’s next generation cruiser.

The current 2011 defense budget and next year’s defense budget aren’t being spared the axe, either. Some of the planned reductions include: ending production of the country’s only wide-bodied cargo aircraft, the C-17; terminating the EPX intelligence aircraft; permanently canceling the Navy’s cruiser; ending another satellite program; and killing the expeditionary fighting vehicle program for the Marine Corps. The Army’s surface-to-air missile program and its non-line-of-sight cannon are also on the block.

Mr. President, since money is so tight that you’re looking to cut the military’s budget, here’s a few ideas: STOP TAKING SO MANY EXTRAVAGANT VACATIONS! And quit wasting taxpayer funds on those expensive fundraising dinners for your 2012 campaign. True, these won’t add up to the billions needed to make a difference, but it’s really in poor taste to spend so lavishly on one’s self while asking our men and women in uniform to get by with less.

If you want to save some serious coin, you could stop expanding the welfare state to $953 billion. Quit trying to force government into the healthcare business at a cost of $2 trillion. And stop the ridiculous “investment” of $117 billion to build an frivolous and unwanted high-speed rail system. These expenditures are not, as you put it, “core investments we need to grow and create jobs,” they’re giveaway programs intended to keep you in power.

Drastic cuts to the U.S. military budget will imperil our soldiers, make our country’s defenses weaker, and result in thousands of jobs lost. Weapons programs don’t just build themselves; thousands of American workers will be laid off. Which brings us right back to your record-level Food Stamps and Welfare. If you really want to spend less on defense, reduce our military’s missions.

Since you’re in such a mood to ask federal workers to do with less, why don’t you ask Congress and your public sector unions to take a cut in pay and benefits?
