Grisly new warning labels
For many years, the FDA has mandated that cigarette makers must place blatant warning labels on cigarette packs. And since that hasn’t deterred smokers from continuing to light up, nanny-state apparatchiks have figured out a new solution: add grisly images to the warning labels — above the brand, no less —in a vain attempt to scare smokers from their habit.
Rotting teeth and gums. Diseased lungs. A sewn-up corpse of a smoker. Cigarette smoke coming out of the tracheotomy hole in a man’s neck. Cigarette packs in the U.S. will have to carry these macabre images in nine new warning labels that are part of a campaign by the Food and Drug Administration to use fear and disgust to discourage Americans from lighting up.
The labels, announced on Tuesday, represent the biggest change in cigarette packs in the U.S. in 25 years.
At a time when the drop in the nation’s smoking rate has come to a standstill, the government is hoping the in-your-face labels will go further than the current surgeon general warnings toward curbing tobacco use, which is responsible for about 443,000 deaths a year in the U.S.
“These labels are frank, honest and powerful depictions of the health risks of smoking,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement.
Certainly, cigarettes are deadly. Everyone has been aware of that fact for decades. But it’s ridiculous for the government to mandate graphic images affixed to the packaging of a legal product. Since cigarette makers have already complied with government-mandated warnings on their packaging, they shouldn’t now be forced to further alter their packaging with such revolting imagery just because cigarettes are bad for you. If the do-gooders in our government want to do away with smoking, then just outlaw cigarettes. Otherwise, leave a legal product alone.
What’s next? Photos of a naked 800-pound man on the packaging of a Big Mac? A drinker vomiting on the side of a can of Budweiser? A diabetic having his foot amputated on a pack of M&Ms?
If busybody Progressives want to place graphic warnings on everything which is bad for you, the Obama administration should be forced to put warning labels on its policies:
