PHOTO: Osama bin Laden’s corpse [Updated]

UPDATE 5/04: President Obama has now refused to release the photos of Osama bin Laden’s dead body, for fear of offending delicate Muslim sensibilities.

“It is important to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool,” said the president. “We don’t trot out this stuff as trophies,” Mr. Obama added. “The fact of the matter is, this is somebody who was deserving of the justice that he received.”

When he announced Bin Laden’s death, President Obama told us OBL wasn’t a Muslim leader. If that was truly the case, then there should be no problem in releasing the images of a dead terrorist who supposedly didn’t represent Islam. We saw death photos of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and the video of Saddam Hussein’s execution. This is no different. In fact, I think it’s essential that we release the Osama death photos not only to serve as an object lesson in justice, but to prove beyond all doubt that Bin Laden is no longer alive.

Besides, no matter how gruesome the photos are, they’re certainly no worse than the images of Americans jumping to their deaths out of the burning World Trade Center on 9/11.

How about if we had him in an open casket funeral provided that the closed half was covered by an American flag? Or, maybe if we dressed his corpse up in women’s panties and threw it on top of a big pile of Abu Ghraib prisoners with Lindy’s dangling cigarette hanging over him?

Since neither photos of flag-draped coffins or prisoner abuse concerned Obama with international backlash, or threats to our troops and ambassadors abroad, this would have seemed like a safe compromise.

And then, in accordance with Islamic practice, we could have strapped a bomb to his remains and tossed him in a Beslan schoolhouse.
