Herman Cain speech at Georgia GOP convention
Columnist Gene Rector summed up Cain’s rousing 30-minute speech:
Speaking without notes or a teleprompter, Cain said the Obama administration has assaulted the fundamental American rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness guaranteed in the nation’s Declaration of Independence.
Referencing the historic document again, he said the founding fathers got it right…
“The American dream is under attack – runaway debt, stagnant economy, and an administration that forces legislation down our throats,” Cain pointed out.
He said America had become a nation of crises – moral, economic, entitlement, spending, immigration and national security.
“Worst of all, we have a leadership crisis in the White House,” he related to the applauding, vocal, largely standing state GOP contingent. “Real leaders fix stuff, solve problems and respect the will of the American people. It is time to get common sense back in the White House.”
He offered several specific moves he would make if elected president:
- A complete change in the nation’s tax code beginning with lowering corporate and individual tax rates, reducing capital gains taxes to zero, removing taxes on foreign-earned corporate income, declaring a tax holiday for American workers and employers – all leading to final adoption of the consumption-based fair tax.
- An energy independence plan that would emphasize “drill here, drill now” in America. “We need to become our own best customer,” he stressed.
- An immigration approach that begins with securing the borders, enforcing laws that already exist, enforcing the current path to citizenship and empowering states to solve their own problems. He said the current administration’s use of the phrase “comprehensive immigration reform” was code for “we don’t know what to do.”
- Restructuring entitlement programs including social security “rather than trimming around the edges.” Most problems can be fixed, he noted, if you have the will of the American people.
I’ve heard some folks’ concerns that Cain was former Chairman for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and I’m still looking into that. But so far, I’m seeing that this gentleman has the best combination of experience and leadership to get our nation back on track and undo the damage of the Obama administration.
