2 stubborn problems with Obama’s birth certificate

Posted 28 Apr 2011 in Barack Obama, birth certificate

P.T. Barnum said “There’s a sucker born every minute.” And with all the hubub surrounding President Obama’s supposed long-form birth certificate that was released yesterday, I’m convinced that Barnum was clairvoyant.

Let me start by saying I do NOT believe that President Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii. I very much want this issue to go away. There are so many other vital issues we need to focus on as a nation and so many of Obama’s policies with which we can disagree.

That said, at the risk of being labeled a birther I am seeing two particular inaccuracies in Obama’s long-form birth certificate that call its validity into question and for which I can find no logical explanation:

  • Obama was born in 1961 and his father’s native country is listed as Kenya. The problem with that is Kenya didn’t exist under that name in 1961; at that time it was called British East Africa or East Africa Protectorate until it received its independence from Britain in 1963.
  • Similarly, the birth certificate lists the hospital of Obama’s birth as Kapi’olani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital; that name didn’t exist until 1978. Prior to that time, it was called Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital. How could a birth certificate generated in 1961 have a hospital name that wasn’t created until 1978?

The birth certificate presented yesterday is dated April 25, 2011 with State Registrar Dr. Alvin T. Onaka signing the stamp with: “I certify this is a true copy or abstract of the record on file in the Hawaii State Department of Health”. Being an abstract does not make it real or official. It just means it matches what is in their electronic system, which would have been entered some time after 1978 (because of the hospital name) or as recently as April 25, 2011 (because of the date), or any time in between.

If the inconsistencies listed above are “corrections” that were made by Onaka or someone from the Hawaii State Dept of Health, then what we are seeing is not the actual long-form birth certificate, it’s another red herring specifically designed to silence those who question Obama’s status as a natural born citizenship or marginalize them further. There should be no need to edit or change the information if a full disclosure is desired. I haven’t and still don’t question Obama’s citizenship, I’m just curious what his original birth certificate contains that is so troubling as to cause the President to spend $2 million dollars to obscure it.

UPDATE: When I began researching these two questions this morning, the Wikipedia page for Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children was pretty short. In the past few hours, it has suddenly been amended with a detailed timeline which suggests that the name was changed in 1931, contrary to Kapi’olani hospital website which lists it as 1978:

This is the story of two hospitals: Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital and Kapi‘olani Maternity Home.

Concerned about the welfare of Hawaii’s mothers, Queen Kapi‘olani held luau and bazaars to raise the $8,000 needed to open Kapi‘olani Maternity Home in 1890. She endowed her legacy with “Kulia i ka nu‘u” or “Strive for the highest.”

In 1908, Albert and Emma Kauikeolani Wilcox donated $50,000 to start a children’s hospital. The community, concerned that two of every seven infants in Hawai‘i did not live to see their first birthday, rallied to match the Wilcox’s gift. A year later, Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital opened.

The two hospitals joined in 1978 to become Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Staying true to its mission, the non-profit hospital has played a vital role in the health of Hawaii’s women, children and adolescents. It is staffed with highly skilled, compassionate physicians and nurses, dedicated to providing the finest care for Hawaii’s families

The abrupt appearance of an exculpatory timeline seems a little odd.

But the thing that might eliminate this as a valid question is that the hospital name appears as “Kapi’olani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital” on the Nordyke twins’ 1961 certificates that are being compared to Obama’s. So the hospital name is at least consistent, even if current documentation is vague. I’m counting this one as checked off.

The Kenya thing still seems fishy. But I’m no history expert, so we’ll see. Fingers crossed this all comes out in the wash, one way or another. Time to put it behind us.

UPDATE: An anonymous commenter pointed out this map of Africa published by National Geographic back in Sept 1960 which clearly shows Kenya by name. So I’ll gladly retract my objections listed above.

Like I said, the only thing I learned from Obama's birth certificate is that Hawaiians make sh*tty presidents.
