VIDEO: Bullied student in Australia fights back, gets suspended

Posted 16 Mar 2011 in pop culture, responsibility

The story of bullied student Casey Heynes holds special significance for me. And when I saw the video I’m posting below, I knew I had to blog about it.

In second grade, I used to be chased home every day by a bully who threatened to beat me up. Just because I wore glasses, I became his target. He would let me know during the day that he was going to knock my teeth out after school. Every day was filled with terror for me, as I tried to make certain I could get quickly from class to my bike so I could escape the beating. And despite my pleas to my teachers for help, and to my parents for karate lessons so I could defend myself, I got no help from either.

Since I was always a short kid, I was bullied often throughout my school career until the ninth grade, when things became unbearable.

During that school year, I endured months of bullying at the hands of a group of boys who decided they needed to make my life a living hell in every class, all day, every day. Toward the end of the year, after no teachers nor friends would step in to stop my daily torment, I had finally had enough. When the ringleader tried to sneak up behind me during Phys Ed class to pull my gym shorts down, I turned around and beat the crap out of him (I would later marvel at a scene similar to my experience — sans the snowball — in the movie “A Christmas Story”). Luckily, the coach who overlooked all the bullying likewise looked the other way during my retaliation.

The bullies all left me alone after that. If only I had stood up for myself earlier, I could have been saved a LOT of stress and heartache.

I think it’s GREAT that the video clip below has gone viral (no thanks to YouTube who have scrubbed their site of all copies, claiming violation of Terms of Service). Kids who are bullied need to know it’s ok to defend themselves when words fail. And I’m glad to hear that many people are speaking out in favor of Casey defending himself.

via Examiner.com — The internet is abuzz with a video released today from Australia showing a bullied student fight back after he was provoked and punched several times. The student, who was identified through Facebook as Casey Heynes, had been the victim of bullying by the same attacker many times before but that has not stopped the Chifley College Dunheved Campus from suspending Casey Heynes.

Known by many as quiet and shy, the act of self defense by Casey Heynes was extremely brutal and swift – after a punch to the face and several more punches to the stomach, Heynes lifted the student into the air and slammed him onto the pavement on his back. The attacker is then seen stumbling around the outdoor corridor of the school dazed, confused and visibly shaken.

The video also shows Casey Heynes trying to exit the escalating situation as another male student attempts to catch up with him. If only for the grace of another female student stopping the second attack, the situation could have very easily become even uglier.

A Facebook group entitled Casey The Punisher has been started on Facebook, and support for the bullied teen has been pouring in from all around the word.

“Casey you’re a legend, you should receive no punishment for that. Stand tall and be PROUD of yourself son. You showed restraint and then walked away after you could have finished the job”

“Well done mate, don’t ever believe the “turn the other cheek” crap, you did well to stand up for yourself and earnt a lot of respect for being as patient as you were.”

“Casey, what a champion mate! Fighting is never called for, but when you have got to defend yourself, fair enough. Good for you!”

A spokeswoman for the NSW Department of Education and Training had this to say today.

[Chifley College] does not tolerate any violence and deals with all cases according to its community-agreed discipline code.

Both students in a fight at the school shown on the Internet have been suspended … the only injury sustained was a grazed knee.

The suspensions are for four days but further action may be taken after the school completes an internal investigation of the incident.

To suspend both students for fighting is ludicrous. Penalize the aggressor, not the defender. What kind of message are we sending to our kids with knee-jerk responses by negligent principals who can’t be bothered to temper justice with truth? Should our kids just curl up in a ball when they’re assaulted? That kind of spineless advice only encourages more bullying. Most bullies are cowards who will crumble after being bested.

Sure, we should teach our children to use their words first. And to seek help from teachers and their friends. But words will only go so far.

I’ve told my daughters that if they ever get bullied, they should seek help from a teacher the first two times it occurs, and to let me know so I can file complaints with the school each time. On the third occasion, they can defend themselves to the fullest (now that I am a fourth-degree black belt, I’ve taught them what I didn’t know as a kid). If it comes to that point, I’ve got a paper trail of school incompetence should I need to contest a suspension, expulsion, or other ridiculous legal matters.

Ahh.. Liberal schools. got to love it. Anti-bullying so sweet. I long for the days of old where two soon-to-be men could beat the crap out of each other, get a couple of licks (paddles) from the principal and go back to class. Now we have suspension, zero tolerance, police, tickets, and lawyers.. It's a good thing too…because look how much less violent crime we have now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess liberalism does work!

This is nothing new. I got in many fights in school, only started one, and got my ass kicked on that one. I tried it all and always got punished. One time I even let the other kid hit me several times, and didn't even hit back, guess what. We both got the same punishment. You can believe after that experiment I always hit back. No fighting is not the answer, but god didn't make us all pussy's for a reason. Amen.

It's hard to believe that little bully only sustained a grazed knee with the way he was limping. The school likely downplayed the true extent of his injury.

I couldn’t agree more with what you typed. And I’m sorry that experienced bullying like I did when I was younger.

This is what agree with you the most on:

“To suspend both students for fighting is ludicrous. Most bullies are cowards who will crumble after being bested.”

I couldn’t have typed that paragraph better myself. therefore, I praise you as I do to Casey for being against bullying. Those who punish anti-bully people for defending themselves ought to be sued. Same thing goes for bullies.

Well, keep up the good work, fellow Casey supporter.
