Obama starts War #3: Libya
Obama just launched a military offensive against Libya without a declaration of war (or even just authorization) from Congress. I wonder how Liberals feel about Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize now?
U.S. Begins Military Assault on Qaddafi Targets in LibyaPresident Obama announced Saturday the authorization of limited military action in Libya as the U.S. launched its first attacks against military targets of Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi.
The Pentagon says 112 Tomahawk cruise missiles have been launched from U.S. and British ships in the Mediterranean, hitting more than 20 Libyan targets along the Mediterranean coastline.
Navy Vice Adm. William E. Gortney, director of the Pentagon’s Joint Staff, told reporters the Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from one British submarine and a number of American destroyers and subs. He said the success of the mission was not immediately clear, adding that additional attacks would commence later.
Gortney said the mission has two goals: prevent further attacks by Libyan forces on rebels and other civilians, and degrade the Libyan military’s ability to contest a no-fly zone.
The U.S. military strikes clear the way for European and other planes to enforce a no-fly zone designed to ground Qaddafi’s air force and cripple his ability to inflict further violence on rebels, U.S. officials said.
“We cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy,” President Obama said in a statement from Brazil.
The president also reiterated that the U.S. will not be deploying ground forces into Libya.
I don’t disagree with Obama’s decision to use force to topple Qaddafi, but I wonder why he’s dragged his feet for a month and allowed America to look weak and indecisive while thousands of Libyans were slaughtered for seeking democracy. I wonder why France is leading the offensive and America is providing “me too” support. I wonder if Obama’s anti-war supporters will now protest him with “No blood for oil” signs.
I also wonder if this will be a repeat of The Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, whereby Clinton half-assedly started a war that George W. Bush had to finish. When the 2012 campaign rolls around, Republicans will need to evaluate their candidates keeping in mind who will be up to the task of cleaning up the mess Obama started.

Evidently, liberals are having so much fun in Iraq and Afghanistan that two wars aren’t enough. No congressional vote, no weapons of mass destruction, no nuclear weapons to speak of, no eminent attack on the U.S. or an ally.Screw it. Let’s have another war!

UPDATE: It now appears that Obama did meet with some members of Congress, not to consult with them per se, but he notified them that military action was about to be taken.
President Barack Obama hosted 18 senior lawmakers at the White House on Friday afternoon to “consult” with them about the new plan to intervene in Libya, exactly 90 minutes before Obama announced that plan to the world and one day after his administration successfully pushed for authorization of military force at the United Nations.Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN) complained on Thursday that the administration had not properly consulted Congress before deciding to support military intervention in Libya, and called for a formal declaration of war by Congress before military action is taken. Inside the White House meeting, several lawmakers had questions about the mission but only Lugar outwardly expressed clear opposition to the intervention, one lawmaker inside the meeting told The Cable.
…Deputy National Security Advisor Denis McDonough held a conference call with top Congressional staffers on Friday afternoon where he emphasized Obama’s “deep respect for Congress in all of these matters,” and gave a read out of the White House meeting. A recording of the call was provided to The Cable.
“The president expects the preponderance of our involvement to last a matter of days, not weeks,” McDonough said.
“At the front end of this effort, the United States will contribute our unique capabilities to neutralize air defenses and military equipment that threatens civilians and civilian-populated areas to enable ongoing enforcement operations led by our partners,” he said. “We will then enable and support other countries to enforce the no-fly zone . . . with us in a support role. . . . It will not be an open ended effort by the United States.”
…Rogers, the chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, also told The Cable in an exclusive interview on Friday that the White House clearly emphasized the U.S. role would be limited.
“We are going to play a very supportive role. France and Great Britain and others are going to lead the way along with our Arab League allies; there may be four or five Arab countries participating,” he said.
Rogers said that the administration had been in contact with lawmakers and had kept him up to date, but the communications had been mostly one way.
“I wouldn’t call it consultation as much as laying it out,” he said.
Many on the Right are claiming Obama bombed Libya without telling Congress. It would now appear that is not the case.
Conservatives need to be more clear in our criticism; at least President Obama met with members of Congress (exactly 90 minutes before he announced it to the rest of the world) to inform them that we were about to commit American troops to combat. It still doesn’t meet the requirements of The War Powers Resolution of 1973, and there was no time for debate — or a vote — in Congress regarding the expenses which we, as a nation, were about to incur. And it’s more than a little peculiar that our Commander In Chief would send our military into harm’s way while he’s vacationing in Rio.
But Obama did inform Congress before the hostilities began, right before he got on the plane for his family vacation in Rio.
There’s still been no word from the previous vocal antiwar movement. I guess a “rush to war” and “blood for oil” is ok with them just as long as a Democrat president does it.

plus they froze his assets so he can't flee. Stupid liberals, stupid stupid obama.
Stop the reckless spending that has become President Obamas legacy. Force the fiscal discipline that Democrats just can't seem to grasp. Slash the military budget now or you are responsibl¬e for destroying our children's inheritanc¬e. Finally, it seems that we are all in agreement. War is just to expensive. Now, the Republican Party controls the senate and can slash our military budget.
Hi, um, Altanta Roofing,
Thanks for your comment. You're mistaken, however, about who controls the Senate. The Democrat Party is still in control of that half of Congress. The Republicans currently hold a majority in the House of Representatives.
