Obama receives transparency award at secret meeting

In George Orwell’s 1984, the newspeak propaganda of the INGSOC government brainwashes the people of Oceana with three mottos:

  • War is peace.
  • Freedom is slavery.
  • Ignorance is strength.

In the Obama regime, they’ve added a fourth: “Secrecy is transparency.”

President Obama Receives Transparency Award But No Press is There to See It

Obama_shhhhhPresident Obama received an award for his transparency in government on Monday, but you’d never know it because the press wasn’t there to witness the meeting.

The award was originally supposed to be given to the president two weeks ago, but the White House cancelled the event that day. Not that there was going to be extensive coverage of that meeting either. The small number of reporters who cover the president daily — known as the travel pool — were only going to be allowed in for a brief part of the meeting.

But that’s certainly more access than what happened on Monday.

According to the White House, the meeting was the first time open government advocates could remember sitting with a president and discussing government transparency.

Monday’s event was also buried in a busy news day for the President where taped a Univision townhall and gave a major speech on the conflict in Libya. The rescheduled event was also not on his official schedule, but the original one was.

Lucy Dalglish, of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press said her group made it clear to Obama that while his efforts have been strong, there remains more that has to be done at all levels of the administration.

Obama’s promises to improve government transparency seem laudable, but there’s many a slip ‘twixt the cup and the lip.

President Obama has abolished the position in his White House dedicated to transparency and shunted those duties into the portfolio of a partisan ex-lobbyist who is openly antagonistic to the notion of disclosure by government and politicians.

Obama transferred “ethics czar” Norm Eisen to the Czech Republic to serve as U.S. ambassador. Some of Eisen’s duties will be handed to Domestic Policy Council member Steven Croley, but most of them, it appears, will shift over to the already-full docket of White House Counsel Bob Bauer.

Bauer is renowned as a “lawyer’s lawyer” and a legal expert. His resume, however, reads more “partisan advocate” than “good-government crusader.” Bauer came to the White House from the law firm Perkins Coie, where he represented John Kerry in 2004 and Obama during his campaign.

Bauer has served as the top lawyer for the Democratic National Committee, which is the most prolific fundraising entity in the country. Then-Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., the caricature of a cutthroat Chicago political fixer, hired Bauer to represent the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

…Bauer’s own words — gathered by the diligent folks at the Sunlight Foundation — show disdain for openness and far greater belief in the good intentions of those in power than of those trying to check the powerful.

Even the Los Angeles Times notes the Obama administration is now denying more Freedom of Information Act requests than Bush did.

The New American lists numerous examples of the Obama administration’s lack of transparency.

  • …a federal court actually fined the Obama administration for lack of transparency back in January 2010, when the Justice Department failed to provide information in the case of U.S. v. Sturdevant.
  • One government transparency watchdog, the Sunlight Foundation, noted the lack of transparency in the Obama administration just days ago.
  • Just two days ago, FavStocks.com reported that the Obama administration has employed “political operatives” to screen Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests
  • In September 2009, three human rights groups targeted the Obama administration for its refusal to confirm or deny the existence of documents regarding the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Ba
  • The administration also provoked complaints of secrecy during the infamous backroom deals that led to the passage of ObamaCare.

Giving Obama an award for transparency almost as ludicrous as when he received the Nobel Peace Prize after only nine days as President of the United States.
