Obama rules out ‘land invasion’ in Libya

fingers_crossedPresident Barack Obama Wednesday categorically ruled out a land invasion to oust Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi as coalition forces launched a fifth day of air strikes against government military targets in the North African nation.

Obama was asked in an interview with the Spanish-language network Univision if a land invasion would be out of the question in the event air strikes fail to dislodge Gadhafi from power. Obama replied that it was “absolutely” out of the question.

No U.S. boots on the ground? Oh, these Marines must be barefooted.

Camp Lejeune Marines To Libya To Strike At Qadhafi Forces

About 2,200 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit will take part in support operations based aboard USS Kearsarge at sea.

…Conditions set forth by the U.N. Security Council towards resolving the unrest in Libya included the removal of Libyan Leader Muammar al-Qadhafi’s forces from Ajdubiyah. These latest strikes by the MEU aimed at preserving the sanctity of the city and the safety of the civilians within it.

So far, the Marine Expeditionary Unit has conducted air strikes via AV-8B Harrier jump jets and one ground rescue. But if ground troops are “absolutely” off the table, why have an entire battalion of Marines in the theater of operations?

Furthermore, why are 400 additional Marines from the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines being deployed to the amphibious assault ship Kearsarge near North Africa?
