As a Texan, I was more than a little shocked to see that a few Leftist dhimmis are using federal funds to implement mandatory classes in Arabic in some Texas elementary and intermediate schools. Even worse, they attempted to do this without first obtaining parental consent.

Some Students at Mansfield ISD schools could soon be learning Arabic as a required language. The school district wants students at select schools to take Arabic language and culture classes as part of a federally funded grant.

The Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant was awarded to Mansfield ISD last summer by the U.S. Department of Education. [As if we needed another reason to get the federal government's grubby fingers out of education — FMP]

As part of the five-year $1.3 million grant, Arabic classes would be mandatory at Cross Timbers Intermediate School and Kenneth Davis Elementary School. The program would also be optional for students at T. A. Howard Middle School and Summit High School.

Parents at Cross Timbers say they were caught off-guard by the program, and were surprised the district only told them about it in a meeting Monday night between parents and Mansfield ISD Superintendent Bob Morrison.

The DOE has identified Arabic as a ‘language of the future.’ [Does that mean Obama's Department of Education is preparing for a global caliphate? — FMP] But parent Joseph Balson was frustrated by the past. “Why are we just now finding out about it?” asked Balson. “It’s them (Mansfield ISD) applying for the grant, getting it approved and them now saying they’ll go back and change it only when they were caught trying to implement this plan without parents knowing about it.”

Trisha Savage thinks it will offer a well-rounded education. “I think its a great opportunity that will open doors. We need to think globally and act locally.” [Here's a better idea: how about we think and act like Americans? — FMP]

Mansfield ISD says in addition to language, the grant provides culture, government, art, traditions and history as part of the curriculum.

Some parents had concerns over religion. “The school doesn’t teach Christianity, so I don’t want them teaching Islam,” said parent Baron Kane. During Monday’s meeting Morrison stressed the curriculum would not be about religion, but about Arabic language and culture, similar to the Spanish curriculum already in place in the district.

No word yet on whether Obama’s Department of Education will be offering grants for American language and culture to be taught to Arabic schoolchildren in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Turkey, Syria, and Indonesia.

How about we prioritize teaching our children to correctly read, write, and speak English before we add foreign language electives? How about we expect immigrants who come to our country should assimilate by learning American art, traditions, history and culture, not demand that our citizens be forced to learn theirs?

UPDATE: U.K.’s Daily Mail is reporting that the compulsory classes may have been put on hold due to parental outrage. But the distric spokesman’s statement was pretty vague.

Almost 200 parents gathered at Cross Timbers Intermediate School in Mansfield last night to ask questions and voice concerns about the proposed programme, according to Mansfield News-Mirror.

Talking after the meeting, some said they had not been properly informed about the classes, which were due to start this term.

Superintendent of the district, Bob Morrison, today apologised for not communicating with parents and invited them to help develop the curriculum, according to reports.

‘Nothing will be taught in the classroom until the curriculum is rolled out,’ a schools district spokesman said.

The Department of Education (DoE) said the programme would put students at an ‘advantage in an increasingly diverse and global society.’

Last year they handed the Mansfield school district a $1.3million grant as part of the Foreign Language Assistance Programme.

UPDATE: As of 4:30 this afternoon, Dallas affiliate CBS11 is now reporting that the program to teach Arabic language and culture in Texas schools “is on hold for now, and may not happen at all.”

I'm a little surprised some father didn't apply hay maker to snot locker during the meeting.

If a school wants to offer classes in Arabic (I would guess Farsi) language and culture, fine. Mandatory? No. Hell no. Wanna fight?
