Christina Aguilera screws up The National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV

*** SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATES ***

At the Super Bowl tonight, Christina Aguilera totally botched the lyrics of “The Star Spangled Banner.” About 51 seconds in, instead of singing the fourth line (“O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming”), she accidentally sang: “What so proudly we watched, at the twilight’s last streaming.”

UPDATE: Via Twitter, @ScottGrovesNC opined — “Look at the words she sang, it wasn’t a screw up, it was a message from the elites to us.”

In addition to screwing up the lyrics of our National Anthem, I really thought she over-sang the song. Aguilera already has a beautiful voice, the multiple runs she kept performing were totally unnecessary. It sounded like a real-life version of Maya Rudolph’s SNL skit:

To future singers who are fortunate enough to perform the National Anthem in a public venue; please…just sing the song. To Americans, it’s beautiful enough without embellishment.

UPDATE: Aguilera got on Twitter immediately afterward and kept it classy.

Oh gee, you had to sing a cappella in front of a national audience. Somebody call the WAAAH-mbulance. You’re a seasoned professional performer, but you made a rookie mistake. Bob Parks gets it right:

The old school way: apologize and let things die down. Americans are very forgiving.
The new skool way: Tell people to die after you make excuses for your screw up. Americans are also good at piling on and guess who usually loses those.

Aguilera’s statement to the press wasn’t nearly as defensive as her online taunt: “I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

UPDATE: Aguilera could use some pointers from Gina Incandela, a 7-year-old autistic girl who, in the clip below, sang our National Anthem for the opening of a Mets game.

It should be legal to beat people like this to death with a claw-hammer.
