ABC News Reporter Brian Hartman Threatened With Beheading

The peace of Islam is alive and well in Egypt, as evidenced by these guys:

A group of angry Egyptian men carjacked an ABC News crew and threatened to behead them today in the latest and most menacing attack on foreign reporters trying to cover the anti-government uprising.

Producer Brian Hartman, cameraman Akram Abi-hanna and two other ABC News employees were surrounded on a crowded road that leads from Cairo’s airport to the city’s downtown area.

While ABC News and other press agencies had been taking precautions to avoid volatile situations, the road to the airport had been a secure route until today. One of their two vehicles was carrying cameras and transmission equipment strapped to the roof, indicating they were foreign journalists.

Hartman says it was only through the appeal of Abi-hanna, who is Lebanese and a veteran ABC cameraman, that they were saved from being killed or severely beaten.

“We thought we were goners,” Hartman said later. “We absolutely thought we were doomed.”

Word of their harrowing ordeal came in a Twitter message from Hartman that stated, “Just escaped after being carjacked at a checkpoint and driven to a compound where men surrounded the car and threatened to behead us.”

“The men released us only after our camera man appealed to the generous spirit of the Egyptian people, hugging and kissing an elder,” he added in a subsequent tweet.

Minutes after receiving news that Hartman had been safely released, ABC News anchor Christiane Amanpour and her team were surrounded and interrogated by a threatening crowd in Cairo.

There’s no way to know if these kooks who threatened to behead the reporters were part of the Muslim Brotherhood or just violent anti-government radicals, but their behavior sure fits the pattern:

Islamic militants took to the Internet to call on Muslims to unite behind Egyptian protesters and not to “waste the chance” to topple President Hosni Mubarak and claim power in the North African nation.

Some extremist websites urged Muslims to rally after Friday prayers and to back the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, which is the largest opposition group in Egypt.

“On Friday, huge crowds should emerge from mosques and the Islamists should unite and work together with other parties and leaders of the protests,” said a statement posted on Muslim.Net, a website associated with al-Qaida.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which is officially banned and calls for rule by Islamic law in Egypt, has joined the protesters in calling for Mubarak’s ouster.

The group has been reluctant to present itself overtly as a driving force in the protests. But some fear it could threaten U.S. interests on issues ranging from Arab-Israeli peace efforts to counterterrorism if it gains power.

While the Brotherhood claims to have closed its paramilitary wing long ago, it has fought politically to gain power. It has also built a nationwide charity and social network that much of Egypt’s population depends on for survival because of widespread poverty and problems with basic services — complaints at the center of the uprising.

“We call upon the Islamists to support the Muslim Brotherhood because it is the most organized group to lead the Islamic movement and to take power,” the statement posted by a commentator on the Muslim.net website said.

Not surprisingly, many of the Egyptian protesters don’t agree with the notion of “moderate Islam” and seem to be following The Muslim Brotherhood’s plan to undermine Western civilization.

Another MB document, this one undated, is called “Phases of the World Underground Movement Plan.” It describes a five-installment program for achieving the triumph of shariah – together with a status report on the realization of several of the phases’ goals:
  • Phase One: Discreet and secret establishment of leadership.
  • Phase Two: Phase of gradual appearance on the public scene and exercising and utilizing various public activities. It [the MB] greatly succeeded in implementing this stage. It also succeeded in achieving a great deal of its important goals, such as infiltrating various sectors of the Government.
  • Phase Three: Escalation phase, prior to conflict and confrontation with the rulers, through utilizing mass media. Currently in progress.
  • Phase Four: Open public confrontation with the Government through exercising the political pressure approach. It is aggressively implementing the above-mentioned approach. Training on the use of weapons domestically and overseas in anticipation of zero-hour. It has noticeable activities in this regard.
  • Phase Five: Seizing power to establish their Islamic Nation under which all parties and Islamic groups are united.
