Time Magazine — Extreme Obama Makeover: Reagan Edition
The liberal spinmeisters are already ramping up the propaganda for President Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign. And Time Magazine is leading the charge by shamelessly exploiting President Reagan’s centennial to resuscitate Obama’s failing presidency. (h/t: velvethammer)
In spite of Time‘s obsequious reporting of Obama’s supposed “admiration” for Reagan, their assertion that Obama studied Reagan’s memoir, or the fact that Dear Leader covets The Gipper’s charisma, it still doesn’t mean that Obama has suddenly shifted toward the center. It just means that Obama recognizes the ass-whipping he received in the 2010 midterm elections and is seeking to pander to Conservatives’ admiration for our 40th president.
The magazine cover shows a Photoshopped image of Reagan with his arm around Obama, as if the two were buddies with everything in common. The cover’s headline reads “Why Obama Loves Reagan.” Online, they’ve published an article entitled “The Role Model: What Obama Sees in Reagan.” But there is absolutely nothing in Obama’s policies nor his attitude that exhibit a respect for — or similarity to — Ronaldus Magnus.
Reagan was The Great Communicator because he expressed boundless pride in America, a dedication to the defeat of communism, and confidence in the founders’ vision for limited government. Reagan was committed to freedom and was optimistic in his approach.
Conversely, Obama seeks to “fundamentally transform” America by implementing “social justice”; a euphemism which masks the confiscatory punishment of achievers, the redistribution of wealth to those who haven’t earned it, and equality of outcome regardless of effort. President Obama is committed to making every American an equal subject under the control of an all-powerful federal government.
Obama doesn’t “heart” Reagan. He’s still dedicated to establishing what Reagan was dedicated to eradicating. And vice versa.
To paraphrase Time’s headline, what Obama sees in Reagan is an enemy of socialism. What Reagan sees in Obama is an enemy of liberty.

What a difference a shellacking makes . . .
Just after Barack Obama won the White House in 2008, Time photoshopped him into an iconic FDR photo at the wheel of a convertible, jaunty cigarette-holder in mouth.
Obama was riding high as the champion of the left, the promise and personification of a born-again big-government New Deal. That was then, this is the 9+% unemployment, recent-shellacking now. So with which president does Time now find it in the president’s interest to be associated? Why, Ronald Reagan, of course.
The new Time cover, unveiled by Time editor Rick Stengel on Morning Joe today, features a Photoshop of a smiling Obama and Reagan, the Gipper’s arm approvingly clapped around PBO’s shoulder. The legend: “Why Obama Loves Reagan,” [a symbolic heart in place of "loves"].

UPDATE: As if your memory needed any further jogging about the differences between Reagan and Obama; Reagan spoke out against socialized medicine like Obamacare back in 1961 (Medicare didn’t even start until 1965).

Obama admires Reagan only in the sense that he aspires to be to progressives what Reagan is to conservatives. But given Obama’s disdain for Reagan’s policies, I have a bit of a hard time believing when he praises Reagan for his ability “to work with leaders of all political persuasions to advance the cause of freedom, democracy and security around the world, including reducing nuclear weapons and imagining a world, ultimately, without nuclear weapons.”After all, let us remember the issue of nuclear disarmament is what drove Obama’s passion that when he studied at Columbia University in the early 1980s. Indeed, in March 1983 Obama penned an article on the subject for Sundial, a campus magazine in which he expressed support for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty “as a powerful first step towards a nuclear free world.” So are we to believe Obama thought highly of Reagan’s ability to work with world leaders during his administration’s arms buildup of the early ’80s? It’s difficult to contemplate Obama viewing Reagan’s “we win, they lose” approach towards the USSR as anything but simplistic and jingoistic. We can only imagine what Obama thought when Reagan referred to the Soviet Union as an “evil empire.” Or how about when Reagan refused to give up the Strategic Defense Initiative when Mikhail Gorbachev offered to eliminate nuclear weapons? I am certain Obama would have gone, well, ballistic. Of course, there is certainly nothing Reaganesque about the new START Treaty with Russia. If Reagan were alive and kicking he would have opposed Obama’s approach to national security with every fiber of his being. [emphasis added — FMP]
