GOP reads Constitution on House floor, Democrats react like vampires to holy water

Why are the Democrats so dead-set against reading the United States Constitution? That’s a rhetorical question, of course. Their record spending reveals their ideological opposition to restraint. And The New York Times wasted no time ridiculing the Republicans for trying to steer the House of Representatives back to its founding principles.

A theatrical production of unusual pomposity will open on Wednesday when Republicans assume control of the House for the 112th Congress. A rule will be passed requiring that every bill cite its basis in the Constitution. A bill will be introduced to repeal the health care law. On Thursday, the Constitution will be read aloud in the House chamber. And in one particularly self-important flourish, the new speaker, John Boehner, arranged to have his office staff “sworn in” on Tuesday by the chief justice of the United States.

Those who had hoped to see a glimpse of the much-advertised Republican plan to revive the economy and put Americans back to work will have to wait at least until party leaders finish their Beltway insider ritual of self-glorification. Then, they may find time for governing.

The empty gestures are officially intended to set a new tone in Washington, to demonstrate — presumably to the Republicans’ Tea Party supporters — that things are about to be done very differently. But it is far from clear what message is being sent by, for instance, reading aloud the nation’s foundational document. Is this group of Republicans really trying to suggest that they care more deeply about the Constitution than anyone else and will follow it more closely?

Rob Port at Say Anything has a pertinent response — “Are oaths of office symbolic grandstanding as well?”

I tend to be a pretty pessimistic guy, especially when it comes to politics. But even I think reading the Constitution is a great start. Still, it’s just that; a start. Time will tell if this new GOP majority will actually abide by their enumerated powers and force their Democrat colleagues to do the same. I’m cautiously optimistic.

The U.S. Air Force has a saying: “If you’re not taking flak, you’re not over the target.” Judging by the Democrat Party’s reaction to the reading of the Constitution, Republicans must be pretty close to the mark!

UPDATE: It figures — the reading was interrupted by some crazed “birther.”

A woman was arrested in the House gallery Thursday after interrupting a reading of the Constitution by yelling out her belief that President Barack Obama is not a natural born citizen of the United States.

When Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) read the part of Article II, Section 1 mandating that only a “natural-born citizen” may be president, the woman, seated in the front row of the public gallery, screamed “Except Obama, except Obama. Help us Jesus.”

An officer removed her from the gallery as she yelled out “My name is Theresa.”

“You’re under arrest,” the officer could be heard telling her as he led her through double doors at the back of the chamber.

Ain't that the truth. Just wait until some naive, well meaning politico tries to remind Congress that they read the Constitution aloud and permission to tax the great unwashed into starvation wasn't to be found.
