Britain’s tuition riots foreshadow a second Obama term

If I had a crystal ball, this is the kind of thing you’d see if you were to look ahead at a second presidential term for Barack Obama. Eventually, government subsidies increase to the point that they run out of funds. And those who are accustomed to entitlements get peevish when the government teat runs dry.

British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once famously quipped, “The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.”

That’s precisely what is happening now in the UK, and thousands of angry Brits are rioting in the streets because they want their “fair share” of someone else’s money.

British lawmakers pushed through a controversial hike in university tuition fees on Thursday, even as tens of thousands of angry students took to the streets of London and across the nation in protest.

…The decision ensures that the cap on subsidized university fees will jump from $4,800 to $14,500 a year, infuriating students who have seized on the hikes to launch a wave of protests against the government’s historic move to slash the budget deficit through drastic cuts in public spending.

On Thursday, thousands marched in the shadow of Parliament’s Clock Tower in demonstrations against the measure, chanting slogans aimed in large part against the Liberal Democrats, who, before joining with the Conservatives, had vowed to fight any tuition hikes.

Clusters of protesters set a bonfire and threw billiard balls, firecrackers and paint bombs at mounted police, bringing parts of central London to a standstill. At least three protesters were arrested and 19 were injured; eight officers were being treated for injuries.

A car containing Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, and his wife, Camilla, was attacked on Regent Street in central London. Neither was injured. The Treasury and Supreme Court buildings in Westminster and a retail shop on Oxford Street were vandalized.

Predictably, socialists in Britain are continuing their violent, childish demands for more handouts from their government.

SocialistRevolutionRevolution is an international socialist youth organisation. We are a group of young activists who are fed up with unemployment, war, poverty, cuts and capitalism. We want to bring down Cam and Clegg’s millionaire coalition and replace it with socialism. …We want to seize their assets and abolish class society with a socialist revolution. This is what we are fighting for. [Emphasis added]

That sounds just like the progressive “One Nation” rally held by the Left in Washington, D.C. in October of this year.

We have an opportunity here to see the end result of Democrat policies. Increased entitlement spending will NOT create prosperity in America. And when we hit the wall (worse than we already have) and have to cut back, we’ll wind up having riots here as well. We need to learn from Europe’s mistaken experimentation with socialism, not continue our mad rush to emulate it.

“I think they’ve made the biggest financial mess that any government’s ever made in this country for a very long time, and Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people’s money. It’s quite a characteristic of them. They then start to nationalise everything, and people just do not like more and more nationalisation, and they’re now trying to control everything by other means. They’re progressively reducing the choice available to ordinary people.” ~Margaret Thatcher, 1976

UPDATE: In a bizarre contortion of history and perspective, Leftist pundit Rachel Maddow compares the Londoners rioting for socialism to the pro-democracy protesters at Tiananmen Square.

Rob over at Say Anything swings the cluebat like Babe Ruth…

The Tianamen Square protests were about rolling back the control of China’s socialist state. It was students protesting against tyranny and for freedom who were ultimately put down, violently, with tanks.

The London protests were a bunch of spoiled college students who want other people to pay their tuition. But if Keith Olbermann can compare Obama’s deal with Republicans on the Bush tax cuts to Neville Chamberlain capitulating to Hitler, then I guess Rachel Maddow can get away with this.
