The Meaning of Yesterday’s Election
*** SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATES ***
Regarding the 2010 midterm election, a Liberal commenter at Huffington Post made a sage prediction last month:
“…don’t worry about teabaggers. That group is small, disorganized, and not likely to vote much.”
Oh yeah? Eat red, Dems.
The Tea Party movement factored HUGE in yesterday’s elections. Over the next 48 hours, the word you’re most likely to hear is “repudiation.” As in, the American people are sick of hopenchange, and they voted for Republicans in huge numbers to push back against President Obama’s radical agenda.
Thanks to a wave of Conservative voters, Republicans won big: 61 seats in the House (so far), a filibuster-proof Senate, a majority of Governorships, and 17 state legislatures have switched from blue to red. The turnover in the House is biggest party turnover in more than 70 years!
That’s not to say that America is in love with Republicans. ‘Cause we’re not.
Tea Party Conservatives have given the GOP a second chance. After turning our backs on them in 2008 and giving them an earful in town hall meetings ever since, Republicans have learned some hard lessons. And if they go back to being “Democrat light,” they’re going to be feeling the doorknob as the door hits them on the way out, just like Alan Grayson and Nancy Pelosi.
I, for one, held my nose and voted for Rick Perry because I couldn’t bear the thought of Texas in the hands of Democrats. I might disagree with Perry on a few issues, and even strongly dislike a few of the things he’s done (the Trans-Texas Corridor and mandatory HPV vaccinations spring to mind). But he’s a damn sight better than having a Democrat enacting Leftist policies and screwing up the Texas economy…which is one of the strongest in the nation, thank you very much.
California, on the other hand, doubled down on stupid and elected Democrat Jerry Brown as their governor. I suppose it’s because Gov. Schwarzenegger wasn’t liberal enough, and voters were eager to see just how much worse things can get.
Same thing in Taxachussetts. They returned Bawney Fwank to a 16th term as Representative despite his questionable ethics and his culpability in the collapse of the Fannie/Freddy housing bubble (which subsequently hobbled the U.S. economy).
And, of course, Harry Reid held on the his Senate seat and his position as Senate Majority Leader. Time will tell if union thuggery had anything to do with that, or if Nevada voters really are that myopic.
Like Michelle Malkin, whose column today is entitled “Take Your Olive Branch and Shove It, Democrats”, I believe it’s time for Republicans to hear the bell, square their shoulders and come out swinging. Bipartisanship CANNOT mean what it’s meant in the past: Republicans conceding to Democrat priorities. It’s time for true conservatism based on prudence and history rather than feel-good giveaways which bankrupt our economy and weaken our American spirit. It’s time to lead America AWAY from the failures of socialism that have produced the fiscal nightmares we’re currently seeing in France and Greece.
It’s no longer good enough to obstruct nihilistic Democrat policies. Now Republicans must be the adults, offering better solutions, explaining the values of individual responsibility and liberty, and demanding the accountability that has been repeatedly promised — and denied — to the electorate.
Obama still has his veto power and Republicans do not have sufficient numbers to override, but last night’s results indicate that Americans expect the Democrat party’s neo-Marxism to be repealed and replaced with common sense solutions which don’t abandon American values and traditions.
With a few notable exceptions, Americans have clearly asked for Republicans to take the wheel from President Obama. And to put the proverbial car on a road that is consistent with fiscal responsibility and the values espoused by our Founding Fathers. Not to play patty-cake with Democrats who have engaged in smashmouth politics for the past four years. Republicans won’t ask the president to sit in the back seat the way he taunted them to do; Obama’s still behind the wheel, he just needs to let Conservatives navigate for a change.

UPDATE: Last night, Representative-elect for Florida’s 22nd district Allen West, Lt. Col. USA (Ret.) gave a humble and stirring victory speech — without teleprompter — in defense of the Constitution, American exceptionalism, border security, peace through strength, and fiscal responsibility. THIS is the kind of leader we want and need!
