Religion of Peace update: FBI thwarts terrorist bombing attempt at Portland Christmas tree lighting

Similar to the failed terrorist attacks here in Dallas last year and at Times Square this year, a Somali-born Muslim has been arrested for trying to detonate a car bomb at a Christmas tree lighting event.

No word yet on whether Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar will walk off of The View in protest.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a Somali-born U.S. citizen, was arrested at 5:42 p.m., 18 minutes before the tree lighting was to occur, on an accusation of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Wait, wait, wait…the maximum sentence is life in prison? Why not the death penalty? Does he get a lighter punishment just because he was inept? If not for the excellent detective work by the FBI, this radical Islamist would have murdered hundreds of Americans, and it was his expressed desire to murder women and children especially.

According to the FBI affidavit, the case began in August 2009 when Mohamud was in e-mail contact with an unindicted associate overseas who was believed to be involved in terrorist activities. In December 2009, while the unindicted associate was in a frontier province of Pakistan, Mohamud and the associate discussed the possibility of Mohamud traveling to Pakistan to participate in violent jihad.

The associate allegedly referred Mohamud to a second associate overseas and provided him with a name and e-mail address. In the months that followed, Mohamud made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the second associate.

Ultimately, an FBI undercover operative contacted Mohamud in a June 2010 e-mail under the guise of being an associate of the first unindicted associate.

Mohamud and the FBI operative agreed to meet in Portland a month later. Mohamud allegedly told the FBI operative that he had written articles that were published in Jihad Recollections, an online magazine that advocated holy war.

Mohamud also indicated he intended to become “operational,” meaning he wanted to put an explosion together but needed help. The two met again in August 2010 in a Portland hotel.

“During this meeting, Mohamud explained how he had been thinking of committing some form of violent jihad since the age of 15,” the affidavit says. “Mohamud then told (the FBI operatives) that he had identified a potential target for a bomb: the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square on Nov. 26, 2010.”

The FBI operatives cautioned Mohamud several times about the seriousness of his plan, noting that there would be many people, including children, at the event, and that Mohamud could abandon his plans at any time with no shame.

“You know there’s going to be a lot of children there?” an FBI operative asked Mohamud. “You know there are gonna be a lot of children there?”

Mohamud allegedly responded he was looking for a “huge mass that will … be attacked in their own element with their families celebrating the holidays.”

Mohamud dismissed concerns about law enforcement, explaining that, ” … It’s in Oregon; and Oregon, like, you know, nobody ever thinks about,” according to the affidavit…

On the drive back to Corvalis, FBI operatives quizzed Mohamud about whether he was capable of looking at the bodies of those who would be killed in his planned Portland attack.

“I want whoever is attending that event to leave, to leave either dead or injured,” Mohamud reportedly told the FBI operatives, the affidavit says.

I’d like to know how a 15-year-old gets the idea that it’s his duty as a Muslim to kill for Allah? Was he taught to hate in a Somali mosque or in an American mosque? Indications are that he might have been taught about violent jihad here in America.

Students at Westview High School in Portland recall a student whose anti-American feelings were intense, if ill-defined.

A former classmate of Mohamud’s named Andy Stull told Portland’s Channel 8 KGW News about a dispute the two boys had over a messy locker. “The main thing was, the way he said he hated Americans,” recalled Stull. “It was serious. He looked me in the eye and had this look in his eye, like it was his determination in life – ‘I hate Americans!’” Stull recalls being sufficiently worried that he reported the encounter to school counselors, but he said he never heard any follow-up.

Another former high school classmate who asked not to be identified said that for a physics class project Mohamud chose to detail the workings of a rocket-propelled grenade. “It was just weird about how someone would choose that, you know,” the classmate told KGW.

How is it that an immigrant who has openly expressed hatred for Americans can be made a U.S. citizen? Robert Spencer has more details on Mohamud’s background and his preparation for the attack.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud’s own statements make it unmistakably clear that he was hoping to commit mass-murder in the name of Islam, in what he saw as an Islamic jihad attack. For a video he made explaining his motives, he dressed in a white robe with a red and white headdress, telling undercover agents whom he thought were his accomplices that he wanted to dress “Sheikh Osama style.” He began the video by repeating traditional Islamic prayers and invocations: “I take refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed; in the name of Allah, the merciful, the compassionate; all praise be to Allah, we praise him, we seek his assistance and forgiveness.”

He then warned Americans that “a dark day is coming your way,” for “as long as you threaten our security, your people will not remain safe.” He asked: “Did you think that you could invade a Muslim land, and we would not invade you,” and boasted that “Allah will have soldiers scattered everywhere across the world.” He challenged Muslims living in the United States: “What has stopped you from fighting in the cause of Allah?” And he predicted that “you will see the victory of Islam.”

All this is perfectly consistent with the Islamic doctrine that jihad warfare becomes obligatory (fard ayn) upon every Muslim if a Muslim land is attacked by infidels.

Yet despite Mohamud’s avowedly Islamic motivations, the Imam Yosof Wanly of the Salman Al-Farisi Islamic Center in Corvallis, Oregon, followed a predictable and oft-repeated pattern when he downplayed Mohamud’s connection to the local Muslim community. Every jihadist who has ever lived for any time in the United States has been simultaneously a devout and informed Muslim by his own account, and by the account of the local mosque leaders, someone they seldom saw and who was at odds with the larger community when he did show up. It raises a large question that no journalist ever has the wit or courage to ask: if these jihad terrorists really had little or nothing to do with their local mosques, and if their understanding of Islam differs so sharply from that of the area Muslims, where did they learn the version of Islam that impelled them to attempt mass-murder of infidels?

All Americans must remain vigilant of suspicious behavior (specifically; those who study to practice jihad, plotting ways to murder Americans and overthrow our country). Certainly, not all Muslims are terrorists. But there are many bloodthirsty sociopaths who live among us, pretending to be “moderate Muslims” while they wait for the day they can carry out Mohammed’s commands in the Qur’an to slaughter non-Muslims in the name of Allah.
