Learning from Cicero

Posted 12 Nov 2010 in economy, responsibility, wise quotes

Today I saw on Twitter a great quote that was attributed to Marcus Tullius Cicero, the famous Roman senator from around 60 BC.

“The budget should be balanced. Public debt should be reduced. The arrogance of officialdom should be tempered, and assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome become bankrupt.”

Although that quote is full of truth which applies to the horrendous situation in which America now finds itself, the words did not actually originate from Cicero. They were written by Taylor Caldwell in her novel A Pillar of Iron, a fictionalized account of the famous senator’s life.

That’s all. The misattribution of the quote just bugged me. Carry on.
