An open letter to the GOP

I’ve been working on a similar post for the past week, but work has kept me too busy to complete it. So when I read my Twitter-buddy Greg W. Howard’s blog today, I figured I’d just go ahead and link him. He says everything I wanted to say, and probably says it better than I could have.

Dear GOP Leaders and Candidates:

Due to the unconscionable arrogance and failures of the Democrats upon controlling the White House and both houses of Congress, control given to them by the incredible failures of the GOP when it held a similar position, it appears the GOP may once again regain control of the House and the Senate in November. All the polling data and the mounting anger of the American people at being ignored by their government may well sweep you back into power in the legislature.

But understand this:

This is not a remarriage between you and the conservative and moderate base of this nation. It is only a trial courtship. You betrayed our trust completely over the years leading up to your ouster in 2006 from control of Congress, and we have not forgotten. But you have forgotten. To prove you’ve forgotten, we need only point to the still too large number of RINO’s (Republicans In Name Only) that are still being offered to us as the answer to our problems as a nation.

We are not stupid. We see these RINO’s as nothing more than progressives with an “R” behind their name. We may hold our noses and vote for them as the lesser of two evils, but even the lesser of two evils is still by definition evil.

We are not interested in a different vision of government control from the Democrats’ version. We want the original vision of government as set forth by our Founders.

We are not interested in the past policies of the GOP. We are demanding a new direction. We are demanding a return to a smaller government which knows and obeys its limits under the Constitution.

We do not want to hear how you’ll fix the Democrat health care plan by improving it. We don’t want to hear how you’ll pass legislation to fix it. We want it abolished. Health care is neither a right guaranteed by the Constitution, nor is it within the purview of Article I, Section 8. In case you’ve forgotten what the Constitution says, we’re providing you a link. We suggest you read it and learn about your limits.

We aren’t interested in how you’ll spend our tax money to promote jobs and growth. Again, that is not one of your enumerated powers. In fact, we want you to simply get out of the way. Our economy is like a thoroughbred race horse with a 300-pound jockey on her back, a jockey going through the drive-thru of a fast food restaurant and supersizing the order yet again. Cut the taxes and let the people decide who wins and loses in the open market place.
[...]
End the practice of buying votes for yourselves with our treasure. If the people of a state want something, they can pay for it with state revenues. And if you’ll stop sucking up all of our money in federal taxes, we will be able to enact programs locally, where they can be run and overseen locally, not from your Washington ivory tower.

For your first term, if you want a second term, we suggest you focus all of your energies on ending all federal government programs which do not fall under your purview under the Constitution. If you cannot get legislation past President Obama to end a program, you do control the power of the purse in the House of Representatives under Article I, Section 7, of the Constitution. Defund all programs that are not properly constituted. We’re broke. Stop mortgaging our kids’ futures for current wants.

That was just a taste, go read the entire post. Greg strikes a fine balance between catharsis and motivation. I’m fired up! How about you?
