Obama’s sauce for the Democrats’ racist goose

There’s been a big stink this weekend over remarks made in 2008 by Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, referencing candidate Barack Obama as a “light-skinned” African-American “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” As if Americans are so racist they wouldn’t only vote for a black candidate if he didn’t look or sound black.

Predictably, Republicans are feigning outrage and Democrats are defending Reid. The reason the GOP has their collective boxers in a bunch goes back to 2002, when Mississippi Republican Trent Lott praised Strom Thurmond (once a segregationist) on the occasion of his 100th birthday:

“When Strom Thurmond ran for president [in 1948], we [Mississippi] voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years, either.”

Lott didn’t mention nor imply any endorsement of segregation. But taken as a soundbite his words weren’t very smart, politically. Still, the backlash from Democrats was immediate and overwhelming. And the furor which followed led to Lott’s resignation despite his profuse apologies. Then-Senator Barack Obama was notably indignant:

“It seems to be that we can forgive a 100-year-old senator for some of the indiscretion of his youth, but, what is more difficult to forgive is the current president of the U.S. Senate (Lott) suggesting we had been better off if we had followed a segregationist path in this country after all of the battles and fights for civil rights and all the work that we still have to do.

The Republican Party itself has to drive out Trent Lott. If they have to stand for something, they have to stand up and say this is not the person we want representing our party.

Now that the proverbial shoe is on the other foot, Democrats are falling over one another to play down Reid’s bigoted remarks. According to President Obama, the Democrat Party itself has to drive out Harry Reid. If they have to stand for something, they have to stand up and say “this is not the person we want representing our party.” But judging by their knee-jerk defense of Reid’s indefensible opinion, he IS the kind of racist person they want representing their party.

This isn’t the first time Dingy Harry has gotten away with making inexcusable public comments. He was the numbskull who proclaimed about the Iraq troop surge, “This war is lost!” He exemplified arrogance when he sneered “you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol.” And he demonstrated what passes for decorum in the Democrat party when he told the Las Vegas Review Journal, “I can’t stand John McCain.” Harry Reid a textbook example of the glaring double standard which the American people continue to tolerate between the Democrat & Republican parties.
