“…December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of American was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.”

68 years ago today, Japanese aircraft bombed the US fleet in an unprovoked surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. In just two hours, they killed 2,350 American soldiers along with 68 civilians and wounded 1,178 more, destroyed 188 American aircraft, and sank 18 ships.

After the attack, President Franklin Roosevelt spoke the now-iconic words describing our nation’s horror and outrage, rousing our collective will to fight for freedom; ours and that of the entire world.

Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces – with the unbounding determination of our people – we will gain the inevitable triumph – so help us God.

Luckily, our forbears summoned great courage and resilience so that through their formidable efforts the forces of fascism and totalitarianism were entirely defeated.

(Can you imagine such a public ceremony of surrender in these days of political correctness and hyper-sensitivity?)

I wish Roosevelt were correct when he said we would “make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.” But I’m sure he couldn’t have imagined an America where so many routinely choose to forget the hard work and sacrifices of those whose blood purchases our freedom. I’m sure he couldn’t have imagined an America where our president is worried about using the word “victory.”

God help us all.

h72273k.jpgI will not allow the significance of December 7, 1941 to fade from our collective memory. I will not forget my countrymen murdered on this day. Nor will I pretend that just because a few years have elapsed we are now somehow safe and insulated from the very same kind of evil which sought to conquer our nation and enslave our forefathers to a system of oppression and subservience. Only now, the danger posed to America is as great from within as from without. The valor and fortitude of our greatest generation is not dead. But to our collective detriment, it is in dangerously short supply.

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey draws an appropriate correlation between Japan’s history of aggression and that of Iran.

The lesson from that war is that appeasement and complacency doesn’t keep one from having to fight a war. It usually forces one to fight from an extreme disadvantage. That’s a lesson we have not remembered in dealing with expansionist powers in our own time, even after a second shock like 9/11 after years of complacency in dealing with al-Qaeda. We’re falling back to treating radical Islamist terrorism like a Law and Order episode, and allowing one of the main drivers of radical Islamist terror, Iran, to arm itself with nuclear weapons with no consequences whatsoever.

On what date will the next “sneak” attack occur?

Ed’s got a terrific grasp of history. If only our president had the same perception.
