Obama gives himself "a solid B+" but Americans give him a far different grade

President Obama appeared on an ABC puff piece with Oprah Winfrey this weekend and, not surprisingly, gave himself high marks for his job performance so far.

US President Barack Obama rated as ‘B-plus’, his performance for the first eleven months in office, emphasizing that he still had much more to achieve.

While claiming to have achieved new grounds in economic and international grounds, Obama awarded himself “a solid B-plus” grade when asked by Oprah Winfrey as to what grade he would give himself.

Asked for reasons why he wasn’t giving himself the top grades, the US president appearing on a ABC network programme ‘Christmas at the White House special’ said because he took office at a time when US was in the midst of biggest challenges it has faced since President Franklin D Roosevelt.

Obama also said that the some elements of his agenda — health care reform and putting more Americans to work — remain undone.

“B-plus because healthcare is not yet signed and if I get this care passed, we will move into A-minus.” Obama said.

10% unemployment (and impending cap-and-trade legislation keeping businesses too afraid to hire new employees), record-high deficit spending in the trillions, disturbing indecision on Afghanistan, weakness toward Iran and North Korea, bringing terrorists to American soil, the entire “Cash for Clunkers” faux pas, and he somehow gives himself a B+? It seems the American people give President Obama a slightly different grade than the charitable mark he gives himself.

First off, if we’re gonna put job performance in the context of school grades, let’s first establish the standard range.

A+ 98-100
A 95-97
A- 93-94

B+ 90-92
B 87-89
B- 85-86

C+ 82-84
C 79-81
C- 77-78

D+ 74-76
D 72-73
D- 70-71

F 69-0

If President Obama’s performance evaluation is being performed by We The People — his employers — the result is quite a bit different than the generous grade he gave himself. Let’s see how Rasmussen scores it with the American people’s feedback.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows that 24% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -18.

That’s a one point improvement from yesterday when Obama’s Approval Index rating fell to the lowest level yet recorded. Prior to the past three days, the Approval Index had never fallen below -15 during Obama’s time in office.
[...]
Overall, 44% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. That’s the lowest level yet measured for this president. Previously, his overall approval rating had fallen to 45% twice, once in early September and once in late November.

Fifty-five percent (55%) now disapprove.

If we’re handing out grades, a 44 indicates a dismal failure. Now, I can hear the critics already: “But FMP, you’re being unfair. There’s no way he can make 100% using that method.” OK then, let’s just allow the Democrats to grade him, so there will be a potential for higher scores. It’s totally unfair and completely biased in his favor, but even so, let’s see how Obama rates among Lefties.

Seventy-two percent (72%) of Democrats now offer their approval while 80% of Republicans disapprove. Among voters not affiliated with either major party, just 36% approve.

Seventy-seven percent (77%) of liberals approve while 76% of conservatives disapprove. The bad news for the President is that there are a lot more conservatives in the country than liberals. However, he gets a bit of a boost because 57% of moderate voters still offer their approval.

Hrmmm. Even with skewed results from Left-only sources, President Obama earns a C- from self-professed Liberals and a solid D from Democrats.

I think this is enough to warrant a parent-teacher conference, don’t you? How about we schedule it for November 2, 2010?
