"Connecting the dots" on Islamic terrorism…a job the Obama administration just won’t do. UPDATE: Obama finally responds & more explosives on planes
***Scroll down for updates***
There’s SO much stupidity that fills this story, it’s hard to know where to begin. So let’s “connect the dots,” shall we?
First, we have a “senior administration official” claiming that this was “an attempted act of terrorism.” But let’s get something straight. This was not just attempted. It was completely carried out. A Muslim terrorist successfully smuggled explosives aboard a flight bound for America and detonated them. It’s only the fact that he’s absolutely inept that the passengers of NWA Flight 253 are — thankfully — still alive.
Next, we have the terrorist himself: Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, the Nigerian whackjob jihadist with ties to al-Qaeda who’s been known to American intelligence agencies for at least two years. He had been placed on the U.K.’s terrorist watch list in May after applying for a visa to study at a bogus college.
Then we’ve got a story in the Washinton Post that the State Department ignored a warning from Abdul Mutallab’s father in Nigeria, who reported concern over his son’s radicalization to the U.S. Embassy (kudos to Mutallab’s father, by the way, for taking preemptive action against terrorism in the name of Islam).
He graduated with an engineering degree from City University in London. Later, his father sent him to Dubai to study for an advanced business degree. In July, relatives said, his father agreed to his request to study Arabic in Yemen. The family became concerned in August when Abdulmutallab called to say he had dropped the course but would remain in Yemen for an undisclosed purpose. Several days later, they said, he sent a text message saying he was severing all ties with his family.
CNN reports: “He implied that he was leaving ‘for the course of Islam.’” But American intelligence didn’t believe this warranted his name to be included on U.S. “no-fly” or “selectee” watch lists. So let’s see…man on terrorist watch list for possible terrorist activity + tip from man’s father regarding likelihood of terrorist activity = yawn. Heckuva job, Homeland Security!
Speaking of which, we’ve got Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano flip-flopping, claiming yesterday on CNN, “One thing I’d like to point out is that the system worked.” And then today, after receiving heavy criticism for her lamebrained remark, reversing herself and admitting “Our system did not work in this instance.” Well no s**t, Sherlock! You might wanna get your disingenuous spin straight before engaging your mouth next time. Heckuva job, Janet!
We’ve also got an EPIC FAIL from the airline screeners at the TSA. To those who claim, “Hey, the flight didn’t originate in the USA, so why are you holding TSA staff accountable?” You might wanna check out TSA’s own page regarding their overseas “strategy.”
Each day, hundreds of flights depart foreign countries en route to the United States. So while securing U.S. aviation security is critically important, equally important for TSA is working with international partners to secure the global transportation network. To carry out TSA’s mission internationally, TSA has twenty-one TSA Representatives (TSARs) and more than 50 TSA inspectors responsible for coordinating and conducting security assessments at more than 300 foreign airports and repair stations in more than 100 different countries. TSARs serve as transportation security liaisons to these host governments in addition to the local U.S. Embassy. TSA inspectors perform onsite security assessments that focus on personnel and equipment preparedness. Through their efforts, TSA has successfully vetted all airports with direct flights into the United States.
TSARs and TSA inspectors work closely with their international partners to share best practices for air cargo screening, employee security procedures, security checkpoints, checked baggage screening and behavior detection. TSA and our global partners continuously share cutting-edge explosive detection technology that advances security through the detection of dangerous materials. These technologies, which can detect explosive materials in multiple forms, are specifically designed to make security effective and to facilitate the travel of passengers.
Not. Even. Close. And after hearing of Abdulmutallab’s botched attack, the best the TSA can muster is some lame new rules whereby all passengers can’t use the restroom nor have anything in their laps for the final hour of flight? Political correctness continues to dominate our security protocol and will likely continue to do so until another terrorist attack succeeds. Heckuva job, TSA!
Perhaps best of all, President Obama can’t be bothered to disturb his vacation in Hawaii to address the America people following the second terrorist attack to occur on his watch in the past two months. ABC News is now saying it’s “likely” the president will speak today about the failed attack on board Flight 253. Heckuva job, Barry!
(Well, perhaps it takes several days to fly Obama’s teleprompter from Washington to Hawaii…)

UPDATE: After waiting 4 days since the terrorist attack on Christmas day (as opposed to his immediate “acted stupidly” excoriation of Cambridge police for arresting his buddy, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.) President Obama has finally responded:
President Barack Obama sought to reassure Americans today that the federal government is doing everything to keep them safe in light of an attempted terrorist attack on a Christmas Day flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.“We do not yet have all the answers of this latest attempt, but the United States will not only strengthen our defense, but we will continue to use every element of our national power to disrupt, dismantle and defeat the violent extremists who threaten us,” Obama said from his holiday vacation in Hawaii.
He has ordered several broad reviews as a result of the attempted attack in the skies over Detroit: a thorough investigation of the nation’s watch list system, and security screening measures to determine how a passenger can get onto a U.S.-bound flight carrying explosives.
The punch line? President Obama promised “we will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable”…right before he headed back to his golf game. I feel safer, don’t you?

UPDATE: President Obama might do well to urge TSA to expedite their efforts because someone else just flew into LaGuardia with an explosive device.
A passenger who flew into LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night was questioned by FBI agents after allegedly boarding the flight with an explosive device in his possession, CBS 2 has learned.Officials confirmed Monday that a crew member on board Piedmont Airlines flight 4126, originating from Baltimore Washington International Airport, was cleaning the plane after it landed in New York around 7:30 p.m. when he found a large firecracker-like device wedged between two seats. Port Authority officials contacted FBI agents, and the passenger from that seat location, identified as 67-year-old Thomas Ouelette, of Bonita Springs, Fla., was tracked down and taken into custody.
