President Obama bows to Japan’s Emperor Akihito
***Scroll down for updates***
Remember back in April, when President Obama made headlines by bowing to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia?
Well, he’s done it again. This time committing a huge blunder by deeply genuflecting before Japan’s Emperor Akihito.
As someone who practices several Japanese martial arts, I’m very familiar with the etiquette of the Japanese bow. Bowing is a greeting in Japan, it doesn’t necessarily indicate weakness. But that all depends on how one performs the bow.
When bowing to someone of higher social status, a deeper, longer bow indicates respect. Conversely, a small head nod is casual and informal. However, most Japanese do not expect foreigners to know proper bowing rules and so a nod of the head is usually sufficient. It is also common to bow to express thanks, to apologize, to make a request or to ask someone a favor.
Shaking hands is uncommon among the Japanese, but again, exceptions are made for foreigners.
In Japan, two people of equal social position will typically bow only slightly to one another. Heads of state will typically shake hands, as demonstrated by Hu Jintao of China and Vladimir Putin of Russia when they both met with Emperor Akihito. Michelle Malkin posted several photos showing many other world leaders properly greeting Japan’s emperor without such spineless obeisance.
President Obama’s overly-deep bow indicates one of two things: either he is submitting to the authority of Japan’s emperor and publicly acknowledging Akihito’s superiority, or he’s apologizing profusely. Or both.
I would prefer our president not to bow before anyone. But if he were to do so in the interest of goodwill and protocol, I’d like to think he’d do his homework beforehand, realizing that he is representing an entire nation. Doesn’t President Obama’s staff prep him before his meetings with world leaders?
After 11 months in office, our president still doesn’t know how to conduct himself properly. So rather than rely on his teleprompter, perhaps Mr. Obama could just keep two simple rules in mind when dealing with foreign dignitaries:
- Miss Manners: “One does not bow or curtsey to foreign monarchs because the gesture signifies recognition of [the monarch's] power over [his] subjects.”
- Trent Reznor: “Bow down before the one you serve. You’re going to get what you deserve.”

UPDATE: Reportedly, Kyodo News refused to run the photo of President Obama’s sickening display of weakness in order to spare him further embarrassment. No wonder.

Well said! I too have an extensive Martial Arts background and it seems that Barry Soetero “may” be submitting or showing great respect because HE is the “new” kid on the block.
Either way, I would have conducted myself a little bit differently and I am 6’3” tall too.
I am also former U.S. Secret Service and worked at the White House and attended a few State Dinners.(1974-1977) FMD/WHD/PPD
Sometimes you also have to look at it another way, and that is that it’s just what HE wants to do and nothing more. It can be nothing at all, and HE is just showing his respect and not to get all excited about it like some others.
I would like to see how Putin would be on the Judo mat thought? Not many U.S. Presidents can do that.
If I were President, I would invite all the worlds Martial Artists to special practice with friends of mine like Sensei Seagal, Jeff Speakman, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, etc… What a party we could have!!!
Maybe even solve the worlds problems through martial arts?
