Icarus Obama
Anyone familiar with Greek mythology has doubtless heard the cautionary tale of Daedalus and Icarus. Daedalus, an Athenian inventor and craftsman, fashioned two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son in an attempt to escape their exile on the isle of Crete. Before they began their flight, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, lest the heat of the sun melt the wax and loosen the feathers. Nor to fly too close to the sea, lest the spray weigh down them down. But Icarus, overcome by giddiness, carelessly ignored his father’s warnings and soared high into the clouds. Soon, however, he realized that his wings had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms. He then plummeted into the sea which still bears his name, the Icarian Sea.
As with many Greek tales, Icarus’ hubris results in his downfall.
In the case of President Obama, his lofty rhetoric coupled with his unbridled ego are beginning to yield the same results.
The latest Rasmussen poll shows that “45% of adults say they would be at least somewhat likely to vote for Obama if he was up for reelection right now. Forty-nine percent (49%) say they would be unlikely to vote for the president’s reelection.”
Even Arianna Huffington is coming down from her cloud.
How did the candidate who told a stadium of supporters in Denver that “the greatest risk we can take is to try the same old politics with the same old players and expect a different result” become the president who has surrounded himself with the same old players trying the same old politics, expecting a different result? How could a president whose North Star as a candidate was that he “would not forget the middle class” choose as his chief economic advisor a man who recently argued against extending unemployment benefits in the middle of the worst economic times since the Great Depression?
In the Greek myth, it’s Daedalus who crafts the wings and gives them to his foolish son, Icarus. In this mythical presidency, the Democrat party and our media complex bestowed their nomination upon an unqualified and inexperienced presidential candidate, expecting him to soar.
Hopefully, today’s election will provide a course correction necessary for America to escape the fate of Icarus. (photo h/t: Lone Star Times)
