Project 2,996: Harvey J. Gardner III

Posted 11 Sep 2009 in 9/11

As part of Project 2,996, I’m remembering Harvey J. Gardner III today. **This post will stay at the top of the page for the entire day…please scroll down for new entries.**

Harvey was only 35, lived in Lakewood, New Jersey, and was the Call Records Management Supervisor for General Telecom. I wasn’t able to find very much on his life, the small tribute page started by Harvey’s brother is no longer online but I saved the content and have reposted it below. (His brother, Anthony Gardner, is one of the founding board members of WTC United Families Group.)

“My brother Harvey was and will always be a hero. He will always be loved, honored and treasured.

Words to describe my big brother: son, friend, spiritual, brave, funny, story teller, talker, patriotic, loved, protector, wise…

I could go on all day…

We’ll miss him forever…until we are together again…”

Anthony also created a tribute page for Harvey at Legacy.com where you can read much more about Harvey’s life and what he was like. His guestbook features three pages of entries by Harvey’s friends, family, and acquaintances.

Harvey enjoyed martial arts and was a student of Vee Arnis Jitsu. From the things I’ve read, he was a good man and someone I would have liked to have known and trained with. He was someone who was creative and industrious, tinkering with computers as well as in the kitchen. He enjoyed veggie eggwhite omelettes every morning at the Akbar Cafe. Many people cited his sense of humor as well as his strength, physically and mentally. At the end, his younger brother Mark managed to talk with Harvey, where he could hear him comforting others and trying to keep everyone calm around him.

He was killed on the 83rd floor of the North Tower.

Not having known Harvey personally, there is no way my simple blog post could do justice to this man’s life. But I hope this page will honor him and remember the life of a man who died a hero.
