Obama capitulates to Russia, scraps missile defense

On the 70th Anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Poland, President Obama has officially announced that he’s scrapping the anti-missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.

WASHINGTON — The White House will shelve Bush administration plans to build a missile-defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic, a move likely to cheer Moscow and roil the security debate in Europe.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell confirmed Thursday that a “major adjustment” is planned and said the decision was made to better protect U.S. forces and allies in Europe from Iranian missile attacks.

The U.S. is basing its move on a determination that Iran’s long-range missile program hasn’t progressed as rapidly as previously estimated, reducing the threat to the continental U.S. and major European capitals, according to current and former U.S. officials.

Iran’s missile program hasn’t progressed rapidly? Oh, that must be why they’re installing their own missile defense system while we trip over ourselves to dismantle ours.

Iranian Brigadier General Ahmad Miqani, Commander of the Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base, is reported as saying that Iran has built a ballistic missile defense system. The reports quote the general as saying that Iran has, “build hi-tech missile defense systems capable of tracing and intercepting Cruise Missiles.” He said the project was a result of collaboration between the Iranian military, Iranian universities and Iranian businesses. He also said the indigenously produced technology would be able to complete with missile defense systems built around the world.

The Heritage Foundation listed a few other facts that seem to be eluding our Community Organizer In Chief:

  • On February 2nd, Iran successfully launched a satellite into orbit using a rocket with technology similar to that used in a long-range ballistic missile.
  • On May 20th, Iran test-fired a 1200-mile solid-fueled two-stage ballistic missile.
  • On July 15th, Germany’s foreign intelligence service, BND, announced that Iran will be able to produce and test a nuclear weapon within six months. BND also stated that it has “no doubt” that Iran’s missile program is aimed solely at the production of nuclear warheads.
  • On August 3rd, The Times of London reported that Western intelligence sources concluded that Iran has not only perfected the technology to build and detonate a nuclear weapon, could assemble a weapon in just six months, and could deliver the weapon on Iran’s Shebab-3 ballistic missile.
  • Just yesterday French President Nicolas Sarkozy said: “It is a certainty to all of our secret services. Iran is working today on a nuclear [weapons] program.”

U.K.’s Telegraph assesses Obama’s surrender to Russian demands:

This is bad news for all who care about the US commitment to the transatlantic alliance and the defence of Europe as well as the United States. It represents the appalling appeasement of Russian aggression and a willingness to sacrifice American allies on the altar of political expediency. A deal with the Russians to cancel missile defence installations sends a clear message that even Washington can be intimidated by the Russian bear.

What signal does this send to Ukraine, Georgia and a host of other former Soviet satellites who look to America and NATO for protection from their powerful neighbour? The impending cancellation of Third Site is a shameful abandonment of America’s friends in eastern and central Europe, and a slap in the face for those who actually believed a key agreement with Washington was worth the paper it was written on.

Obama’s “judgment to lead” now includes abandoning our European missile defense and claiming it makes us and our allies safer?

This seems a perfect example of “don’t piss in my face and tell me it’s raining.”

UPDATE: President Obama telegraphed today’s servile capitulation to Russia back in February, 2008.

UPDATE: How do you say “under the bus” in Polish?

Some of America’s staunchest allies are the East Europeans — and on Thursday, they expressed dismay at what many see as a slight after decades of their support for the U.S.

Among them were some famous names, including Lech Walesa, the former Solidarity leader and Polish ex-president. “I can see what kind of policy the Obama administration is pursuing toward this part of Europe,” he said ruefully, adding: “The way we are being approached needs to change.”

For most of the past decade, cozy relations with Washington were practically a given across the “new Europe.” George W. Bush famously courted the region after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and leaned on it for troops to fight alongside U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Aleksander Szczyglo, head of Poland’s National Security Office, characterized the change as a “defeat primarily of American long-distance thinking about the situation in this part of Europe.”
