Ricardo Montalban dies at 88
Via AP:
Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born actor who became a star in splashy MGM musicals and later as the wish-fulfilling Mr. Roarke in TV’s “Fantasy Island,” died Wednesday morning at his home, a city councilman said. He was 88. Montalban’s death was announced at a meeting of the city council by president Eric Garcetti, who represents the district where the actor lived. Garcetti did not give a cause of death.
Those of us who remember the 70s will fondly recall his memorable stint as Chrysler’s pitchman for their Cordoba model, extolling the virtues of “soft, Corinthian leather.”
But geeks like me will always have a soft spot for the role he played as the villainous Khan Noonien Singh in the Star Trek original series episode “Space Seed” and later in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (the best of the series).
Since 1949, he endured excruciating agony from a spinal injury he suffered after falling off a horse. But despite the temporary paralysis and unrelenting pain which continued the rest of his life, he continued his fruitful career and earned his place as a beloved Hollywood icon.
R.I.P. Mr. Montalban. You are missed.
