R.I.P. Miko

Tonight, my 10-year-old pet Sugar Glider, Miko, passed away. She’s always been very healthy and active, but tonight around dinnertime she came out of her pouch and was laying on the bottom of the cage, her eyes uncharacteristically droopy and her ears down. I scooped her up and held her for a while before going online to look up what may be the matter. I quickly headed to the store for a medicine syringe and some Pedialyte to stave off dehydration until I could get her to the veterinarian. It appears that she may have had Hind Leg Paralysis – a unfortunately common malady for Gliders. Although she’s always eaten a balanced diet with a good mix of fruits, veggies, protein and plenty of calcium (the ingredient whose lack causes the condition), she still managed to come down with it and within 5 hours from when I first saw her acting lethargic, she had died.

She was a very affectionate and playful pet and will be sadly missed.
