Starbucks turns (RED) for World AIDS Day

Posted 01 Dec 2008 in call to action, healthcare

Today marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, which takes place every year on December 1. And while the global percentage of adults living with HIV has leveled off since 2000, 33 million people are still living with the virus and there are nearly 7,500 new infections each day.

Which is why there’s no room for complacency. Much progress has been made in fighting this disease, but much work still needs to be done.

One of my favorite companies, Starbucks, has partnered with (RED) to address World AIDS Day by offering 3 exclusive beverages, with 5 cents from each purchase contributed directly to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS and HIV. And today, the company’s website is redesigned in red and this cool footage is showing on its home page.

Customers can also join the new online (STARBUCKS)RED Community launched to bring to life the potential collective impact that thousands of people can make if they choose to purchase (RED) at Starbucks. Customers can choose to take their photo in the (RED) parenthesis when visiting Starbucks, or upload one of their favorite photos into the (RED) parenthesis directly on www.starbucks.com/red. By using the “impact calculator” on this site, customers can learn how their (STARBUCKS)RED purchases translate into days of medicine to help save lives in Africa.

As Bono said, “It’s pretty mind-blowing to think that millions of people can buy (RED) going about their daily lives and in doing so raise millions of dollars to fight AIDS in Africa. That’s not a bad hit from your caffeine.”
