SOTU fun
Just a few observations about last night’s State of the Union speech…
First off, I hate how practically every sentence is punctuated by Congress clapping and rising to their feet. It’s just so fake. The political equivalent of dancing the Hokey Pokey. That said, I understand that it’s a built-in part of the SOTU ritual, and an opportunity for both parties to literally demonstrate where they stand on the issues being addressed.
Even in this contrived setting, I found it sadly telling that most Democrats refused to clap or stand at any mention of victory in the war.
Why is President Bush still incapable of pronouncing nuclear?
Nancy Pelosi’s lizard-like gaze was a constant distraction. Oh well, at least she didn’t fall asleep like President Clinton at the MLK memorial service.
Once again, Democrats made it crystal clear where they stand on tax relief. They don’t. Are you paying attention, middle-class America? (h/t: Bryan Preston)
President Bush’s best line of the SOTU address was a real zinger, and very similar to what I tell any liberal in favor of higher taxes:
Some in Washington argue that letting tax relief expire is not a tax increase. Try explaining that to 116 million American taxpayers who would see their taxes rise by an average of $1,800. Others have said they would personally be happy to pay higher taxes. I welcome their enthusiasm, and I am pleased to report that the IRS accepts both checks and money orders.
My favorite moment of the night, however, was Obama’s huge “diss” of Hillary Clinton, refusing to shake her hand as she tried to make nice with Ted Kennedy.
For the first time in ages, she’s not the coldest person in the room.
