Cautious patriotism

Posted 31 Dec 2008 in patriotism, wise quotes

Here are just a few more tidbits of wisdom from our forbears that I thought held some special relevance as we head into 2009. May it be better than 2008, and nothing like 1984. “Government is not reason; it is not eloquence — it is force. Like fire it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.” ~ George Washington “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” ~ Wendell Phillips “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” ~ Benjamin Franklin “Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these...

A few words on responsibility vs. socialism

Posted 31 Dec 2008 in conservatism, responsibility, socialism

This quote is usually misattributed to Abraham Lincoln, but it’s good nevertheless and especially worth revisiting as we head into an Obama presidency. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by destroying men’s initiative and independence. And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and...

Defending Israel’s "disproportionate" defense

Posted 30 Dec 2008 in foreign policy, terrorism, war

With all the talking heads this weekend discussing Israel’s recent military actions against Hamas for firing over 200 rocket and mortar attacks onto Israeli civilians and whether or not the Israeli response was justified or “proportional”, this quote from Sigmund, Carl and Alfred sums things up best for me. “There is no such thing as a ‘disproportionate response’ to calls for genocide. All conflicts end with ‘disproportionate response.’  The Israelis are entitled to defend themselves from those who openly or not so openly call for their annihilation. Peace among nations is arrived at when the cost of war becomes overwhelming.” Damn skippy. It’s about time the world gets serious in this “war against terrorism.” So long as we allow...

Obama = Lincoln?

Posted 23 Dec 2008 in Barack Obama, cult of Obama, lies, media bias, socialism

The mainstream media keeps doing its damndest to frame Barack Obama as the second coming of Abraham Lincoln. We’ve already seen the arrogant Photoshop superimposing Obama’s face over Lincoln’s as well as replacing his head on the penny. Now the left is gushing over Obama’s plan to use Lincoln’s Bible during his inauguration. On January 20th, President-elect Barack Obama will take the oath of office using the same Bible upon which President Lincoln was sworn in at his first inauguration. The Bible is currently part of the collections of the Library of Congress. Though there is no constitutional requirement for the use of a Bible during the swearing-in, Presidents have traditionally used Bibles for the ceremony, choosing a volume...

$50 Million for Obama’s inauguration?

Posted 22 Dec 2008 in cult of Obama, Democrats, economy, liberals, outrage

I don’t know what to make of this economy. First, we keep hearing how America is facing its worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and our banks and auto makers belly up to the bar to receive billions in bailouts for their ineptitude. Then we hear that Congress voted themselves a $4,700 payraise, increasing their annual salaries to $174,000. Now, we’re hearing that the Democrats want to spend $50 million dollars in federal funds for Obama’s inauguration. Is anybody else hearing echoes of “Let them eat cake”? When President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office next month, the nation’s capital will be the site of a massive celebration. But local officials are worried they might get stuck...

Banks refusing to disclose how they’re spending bailout money

Posted 22 Dec 2008 in bailouts, corruption, economy, outrage

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! And never mind how he’s spending your money, either! WASHINGTON — It’s something any bank would demand to know before handing out a loan: Where’s the money going? But after receiving billions in aid from U.S. taxpayers, the nation’s largest banks say they either can’t track exactly how they’re spending the money or they simply refuse to discuss it. “We’ve lent some of it. We’ve not lent some of it. We’ve not given any accounting of, ‘Here’s how we’re doing it,”’ said Thomas Kelly, a spokesman for JPMorgan Chase, which received $25 billion in emergency bailout money. “We have not disclosed that to the public. We’re declining to.” The Associated...

Shorty Awards

Posted 22 Dec 2008 in personal, technology, Twitter

What? You’ve never heard of the Shorty Awards? The Shorty Awards honor the best producers of short content (140 characters or less) on Twitter. As a new media aficianado, I’ve been an avid Twitter user since January 24, 2007, tweeting about a lot of the same political and current event stuff stuff you find here on the blog as well as various personal crapola as it happens. To date, I’ve posted 3,767 tweets, not counting direct messages. So in the spirit of “ye have not because ye ask not” (and in the interest of trying to grow this blog a bit), I’m gonna ask any of you who enjoy my posts here and/or follow my Twitter stream to nominate...

President Clinton impeached 10 years ago today

Posted 19 Dec 2008 in Bill Clinton, Democrats, liberals, lies

On December 19, 1998, President William Jefferson Clinton was impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors by the House of Representatives on charges of perjury to a grand jury and obstruction of justice.

Bush gives Detroit $17.4 BILLION Christmas present

Posted 19 Dec 2008 in bailouts, economy, George W. Bush, incompetence, outrage

I’ll bet you didn’t think you’d be giving such an extravagant gift this year, eh? Well, thanks to President Bush, you and your children better dig deep, because $17.4 billion dollars of your money is going to incompetent American automakers and the union that helped make them the failures they are. Merry Christmas, Detroit. The government will offer up to $17.4 billion in loans to the ailing U.S. automakers and expects General Motors and Chrysler LLC to access the money immediately, a senior administration official said on Friday. Some $13.4 billion will be made available in December and January from the $700 billion fund that was originally designed to rescue struggling financial institutions, but the loans would be called...

American naturalization ceremonies conducted in Spanish?

Posted 18 Dec 2008 in outrage

WTF? One of the requirements for American citizenship is “…applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language.” But that didn’t deter an activist judge who abused his authority while administering the oath of citizenship to new immigrants. Oath ceremonies Conducted in a Foreign Language In one district with a large Spanish-speaking population, the judge administered the oath ceremony (introductions, directions, speech, artistic presentations, etc.) entirely in Spanish, with the exception of administering the oath itself in English and Spanish. A USCIS official polled the audience, by show of hands, to determine if every applicant present understood Spanish; despite the fact that several persons raised their hands indicating...
