Religion of Peace update: Bangladesh cartoon outrage
Big shockeroo, more Muslims are getting their boxers in a bunch and rioting over another cartoon, this time in Bangladesh. (h/t: LGF)
Violence over Bangladesh cartoonStreet clashes have broken out in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, as Islamic activists protested over the publication of an “offensive” cartoon.
Witnesses say that hundreds joined the protest, even though such demonstrations are officially banned under the country’s state of emergency.
Police baton-charged some of the protesters as they tried to break through barricades.
The leading Bangla-language newspaper published the offending cartoons.
Prothom Alo has since apologised for them and said that it has sacked an editor.
(Those responsible for sacking the people who have just been sacked, have been sacked. And when we say sacked, we mean beheaded.)
Witnesses say the violence began after Friday prayers, when protesters tried to break through barricades put up to prevent them reaching the Prothom Alo offices. The demonstrators demanded the execution of the paper’s editor, Matiur Rahman, and burned effigies of him and his Bengali-language daily.
The cartoon featured a conversation between a mullah and a child and ended with a joke about the Prophet Mohammed’s name.
Nice. At least they finished their prayers before demanding the execution of the cartoonist in question.
What makes the cartoon so outrageous? Here’s the supposed translation:
* Boy, what is your name?
- My name is Babu.
* It is customary to mention Muhammed before the name.* What is your father’s name?
- Muhammed Abu* What’s this in your lap?
- Muhammed cat
I guess it’s a good thing that the comic strip “Jesus Cat” never caught on here in the states. Imagine the carnage.
