Questions about the "Jena 6"

Posted 20 Sep 2007 in racism

If six white teens had hospitalized a black teen by kicking and stomping him, do you think there’d be rallies in support of the whites? Would there be calls for the charges against them to be dropped?

And how do you think it’d be reported if the protesters shouted “White power!”?

That’s essentially what’s happening right now in Louisiana, only switch the races and you’ll have it right. There are thousands of people demonstrating an appalling degree of racism and bigotry.

Thousands rally in Jena ‘march for justice’

JENA, Louisiana (CNN) — Thousands of protesters clogged the tiny town of Jena, Louisiana, Thursday to show their indignation over what they consider unjust, unequal punishments meted out in two racially charged incidents.

They swarmed over the grounds of Jena High School, surrounding the stump of the tree from which nooses hung in early August 2006, about three months before six black teens known as the “Jena 6″ were accused of beating a white classmate.

In the background, groups shouted “Black power” and “No justice, no peace.”

Demonstrators are protesting what they say are excessive criminal charges and bond amounts for the teens.

Bails for the “Jena 6″ were set at between $70,000 and $138,000, and all but Bell have posted bond. Bell, 17, has been in prison since his arrest in December. The judge has refused to lower his $90,000 bail, citing Bell’s criminal record, which includes four juvenile offenses — two simple battery charges among them.

So what’s excessive? One of the six thugs has a criminal record and history of violence, so it stands to reason that his bail might be higher.

“It breaks our heart to see him handcuffed and in leg shackles,” Sharpton said. “But his spirit is high. He has said that he is very encouraged to know that thousands are coming to this town to stand up for him and his five friends.”

Well, isn’t that touching? Thousands of racists turn out to demonstrate in favor of violent punks who attempted to stomp a fellow student to death. It’s so typical that Al Sharpton would gin up race hatred in order to keep himself in the limelight. I just find it odd that so many people are joining him in his support for violent delinquents.

The teens were initially charged with attempted murder after they allegedly knocked out Justin Barker — a white classmate — while stomping and kicking him during a school fight on December 4, 2006.

Barker was taken to a hospital with injuries to both eyes and ears as well as cuts. His right eye had blood clots, said his mother, Kelli Barker.

Based on the injuries Barker received, I can understand why the initial charges were for attempted murder. The “Jana 6″ didn’t seem satisfied just to beat up this kid, they seem like they were gonna make sure he was hospitalized or worse.

It’s damn savage, no matter what race is on either side of this fight. Six against one is cowardly and wrong, and it’s just as wrong to come to the defense of the cowards just because of the color of their skin.
