Moveon.org smears Gen Petraeus, Dems silent

Posted 10 Sep 2007 in 2008 election, 9/11, Democrats, Iraq, Nancy Pelosi, war

Sickening.

Far-left activist group MoveOn.org set the bar for despicable conduct during the Clinton impeachment, when it was formed to urge Congress to overlook Clinton’s various crimes while in public office. And they’ve led the charge for Democrats’ Bush Derangement Syndrome when they ran ads comparing President Bush to Adolph Hitler. They’ve developed quite a knack for creating memes which extremist liberals enjoy parroting.

Today, they’re smearing General Petraeus, running a full page ad in the New York Times (naturally) claiming that he’s a traitor to his country because his assessment of the war in Iraq differs from what they want to hear. Of course, this happened BEFORE they heard what he has to say.

Seeing as how Gen. Petraeus is one of our American soldiers, is this how the Left supports the troops?

These “progressives” are downright sick and twisted with hatred and political ambition. Deranged doesn’t even begin to cover their behavior.

Michelle Malkin and Little Green Footballs are liveblogging the testimony, as well as providing a good roundup of some response to this rabid attack by the Far Left.

The Weekly Standard’s Pete Pete Hegseth sums up this outrage:

Let’s be clear: MoveOn.org is suggesting that General Petraeus has ‘betrayed’ his country. This is disgusting. To attack as a traitor an American general commanding forces in war because his ‘on the ground’ experience does not align with MoveOn.org’s political objectives is utterly shameful. It shows contempt for America’s military leadership, as well as for the troops who have confidence in him, as our fellow soldiers in Iraq certainly do.

General Petraeus has served this country for over 35 years with honor, distinction, and integrity. And this is not just about General Petraeus. After all, if General Petraeus is “cooking the books,” then the entire military chain of command in Baghdad, and all the staff, military and civilian, who have been working with General Petraeus are complicit, since Petraeus did not write his report in isolation. They are all, apparently, ‘betray[ing] us.’

Do these extreme Left tools REALLY believe that the entire chain of command in our military is completely bereft of character? Do they really believe that everyone is conspiring to throw away our soldiers’ lives?

Oh wait, I forgot, these are the same folks that believe 9/11 was an inside job. Nevermind. Please continue…

MoveOn.org has been working closely with the Democratic congressional leadership –as an article in today’s Sunday New York Times Magazine makes clear. And consider this comment by a Democratic senator from Friday’s Politico: “‘No one wants to call [Petraeus] a liar on national TV,’ noted one Democratic senator, who spoke on the condition on anonymity. ‘The expectation is that the outside groups will do this for us.’

So, veterans who served in Iraq ask the Democratic leaders in Congress: Does MoveOn.org speak for you? Do you agree with MoveOn.org? Or do you repudiate this despicable charge?

MoveOn.org has helped frame the core choice: Whom do we trust to run this war–MoveOn.org and its allies in Congress, or Gen. David Petraeus and his colleagues?

Indeed, let’s hear the answers from the Democrat leadership. Because the Dem rank and file have made their position crystal clear.

UPDATE: Gen. Petraeus’ statement is available here.

Since there’s been no official Democrat repudiation of MoveOn.org’s slandering Gen. Petraeus, we might wanna ask the same questions of the Democrat presidential candidates, many of whom are firmly in the hip pocket of MoveOn. Will they also ignore any good news about our troops while they turn a blind eye to the antics of their kook fringe? More importantly, will they continue to accept money from MoveOn?
