9/11: Six Years On
It’s hard to believe it’s been six years since the attacks on September 11, 2001. I still can’t watch the footage without tearing up, and it makes me angry when I see people already downplaying the significance of that day, or claiming that our own leaders orchestrated this heinous act. In the weeks after the towers fell, Americans vowed to “never forget.” But our current political climate says otherwise. When our elected leaders would rather tear each other down over political power rather than continue the fight against those sworn to enslave or murder us, it shows just how tragic our short attention span has become.
This fight will not be over quickly. It probably won’t be over within the next decade, it may not even be over within my lifetime. But I will never forget. I won’t forget those who were killed because they don’t pray to Allah. I won’t forget the heroism of the men and women who risked – and in many cases – gave their lives to rescue the victims of the towers and the Pentagon. I won’t forget the courage of the people who refused to allow hijackers to turn Flight 93 into another weapon of mass destruction. And won’t forget the fortitude of our soldiers who believe in the cause of freedom, fighting and giving their lives to protect ours.
