Stop the violence by removing the police?
After watching the imbecilic John Edwards enunciate his lock-step Democrat flip-flop on the Iraq war, something occurred to me. With all the sectarian violence going on between Sunni, Shia, and Kurds, the situation is not too unlike a gang war like the types we find here in America.
In L.A., there is no shortage of violence between the Crips and Bloods gangs as well as the numerous Hispanic and Asian gangs. When things begin to spiral out of control, it would be the height of foolishness to say that police should completely pull out of the area because it’s so hard to keep the peace. City officials wouldn’t be voting for a non-binding resolution to express a lack of confidence in the police officers to get the job done. And they sure as hell wouldn’t be voting to remove funds from law enforcement. The deaths of police officers at the hands of gang members wouldn’t create a cry in the public for a “strategic re-deployment” away from the areas of hottest gang violence.
Yet that’s the kind of actions we’re seeing and hearing from top Democrats today when the topic of Iraq comes up.
Pulling out now would make things vastly worse in Iraq. We did the right thing by removing Saddam from power. Now we need to continue to do the right thing by helping the Iraqi forces keep the peace as best as possible. Just like increased police presence can help suppress gang activity, so will an increase in troops help keep the terrorist cockroaches in their dark corners rather than running roughshod through the streets, killing with impunity. And it will send a strong message to the terrorists (al-Qaeda and the other nations like Iran and Syria that are supporting the chaos) that they can’t simply outlast us. The President’s plan to increase troop presence in the region to bolster Iraqi forces is the right one, and hopefully will enable a higher degree of safety for the civilian population while a diplomatic solution can continue to be pursued between Iraq’s main factions. And the region.
Urge your elected representatives to get (or stay) on the side of law and order. Our politicians can get back to their petty jobs of attacking each other’s personal peccadillos and let our forces finish the good thing they’ve started in Iraq.
