Dueling insanities
Is it just me, or was anyone else annoyed at Fox’s decision to put a maniacal racist on their newest episode of Trading Spouses?
It’s pretty bad when you’re paired up with “God Warrior” Marguerite Perrin and you wind up looking like the crazier of the pair. It takes quite a character to make her look (almost) normal, but Abasi Malone pulls it off easily. Militant doesn’t even begin to cover this guy. He’s a member of the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement, a “black power” group derived from the African People’s Socialist Party. It seems he can’t take a breath without inculcating his daughter, and anyone else who will listen, on the evils of white people. All white people. (Hey, did you know white people have been repressing black people for “hundreds of thousands of years?” Just ask Abasi!) And, oddly enough, he only refers to black folks as Africans. Not even African-Americans, mind you, but Africans (this guy isn’t even from Africa). But, of course, he doesn’t let facts get in the way of his warm blanket of racism.
Not to be outdone by Abasi’s bigotry, the fine folks at Fox did make sure to bring back Marguerite’s hateful friends to meet Abasi’s wife, Latoya. Sure does make for an ugly look at religious people, that’s for sure. Those bitches are the reason I despise most churches.
What if the roles were reversed and they put some klansman on the show who kept talking about white power and how blacks do everything bad? I think there would be quite the outcry – and rightly so! C’mon, Fox, I know you’re all about ratings (as are all TV networks), but come on. You have a responsibility not to reward hateful behavior with $50,000 and 15 minutes of fame.
