Democrat name brouhaha

I think this is hillarious!

Those of you who have read this blog for a while may have noticed that I never refer to the “Democratic” party, choosing instead to refer to them more properly as the Democrat party. Republicans belong to the Republican Party, Democrats should belong to the Democrat Party, easy squeezy. I’ve been doing this for many years because the subtle demagoguery of the word “democratic” bugs me. Similar to how Dems continually couch their pet issues as being “for the children”, they figure “who could be against democracy?”

Sadly, I think it works all too often. People descibe themselves as Democrats, not because they believe in the principles (ha!) of the Democrat party – if they even know what those are – but because they’re afraid to NOT be associated with the party that claims moral high ground by disguising socialism in hollow platitudes like “fairness,” “prosperity,” and “progress.” It sounds, and more importantly feels good to be a Democrat.

Why, then, don’t they like being called Democrats? I mean, I can almost understand why Liberals like to hide behind the new mask of calling themselves “Progressives,” but why on Earth are Dems so worked up about their own title?

Rush Limbaugh recently brought this discrepancy to his listeners:

“Are you people aware of how sensitive the Democrats are if you say ‘Democrat’ Party, not ‘Democratic’ Party? You know, they love it to be called Democratic Party because of the subliminal connotation to ‘democratic,’ i.e. fair, but they are called Democrats. They are not called Democratics! So people have started calling them the Democrat Party. It really upsets them.”

Welcome to the party, Rush. Stop trying to steal my cool. Even The New Yorker was way ahead of you on this.

Begala.jpgWhen President Bush used the correct term for Democrats during Tuesday’s State Of The Union speech, it really set them off. Ultra-left blogger Markos Moulitsas Zúniga noted it, John Podesta (Clinton’s chief of staff) described it “like nails on a chalkboard” and CNN contributor and Democrat strategist Paul Begala ranted about it this week, calling it “insulting.” (Ironically, this was just before he threw out the terms “fringe right” and “kook right”).

Imagine that. Calling their party by their proper name is an insult? Well, I suppose it is. I sure would take offense if someone called me a Democrat.
