Ponder your freedom today

Posted 11 Dec 2006 in wise quotes

Only five years after 9/11 and so many of us have already gone back to sleep.

Taken the blue pill (to borrow from The Matrix mythology).

I am sick of the ignorance being displayed daily by the antiwar crowd. And I had written a long rant, trying to smack us all in the face and wake us up about being the UNITED States of America and getting serious about the jihadi threat we are facing. But fuck it, I’m pissed off and found a few quotes that do the job in a much more elegant fashion.

“The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life.”
— Teddy Roosevelt

“Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand; it never has and it never will.”
— Frederick Douglass

“If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom; and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that too.”
— Somerset Maugham

“It is the common fate of the indolent to see their rights become a prey to the active. The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt.”
— John Philpot Curran

“So long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men.”
— Voltaire

“When liberty is taken away by force it can be restored by force. When it is relinquished voluntarily by default it can never be recovered.”
– Dorothy Thompson
