Creativity burst!
I’m so fired up!
Last night, traci and I went out to one of our favorite Mexican joints and we were enjoying a brief departure from our diet with cheesy, spicy goodness and margaritas made with Herradura tequila. And I told her that one of the things I’m gonna do next year is self-publish a small preview book of the graphic novel character I’ve been messing with since 1984. See, I’m a bit of a perfectionist and always shoot myself down whenever I get rolling on drawing or writing the story. It never seems to measure up against the greatest stuff out there. And so, I wind up hobbling my own efforts even before my creativity has a chance to develop further. It’s kept my idea grounded for the past 20+ years.
But not for much longer.
While I was explaining the concept and characters to her, things in my head started coming together. Fragments of ideas started to make more sense. Well, duh, it was kinda like the brainstorming I do everyday at work, where we have to come up with clever and strategic ideas for our clients’ advertising. And after all these years, I realized I’ve never actually sat down and committed myself to a real brainstorm. I just wrote in fits and starts. And shot down the larval ideas without ever building on them. Last night, however, things started to click. And I got energized about making it happen this year (meaning 2007).
Long time readers to this blog know that I hate my job. For the several months, I’ve been trying to figure out what else I might be qualified to do. I keep asking myself what else would I even want to do for a living besides advertising? The kind of thing like, as they say, I would wanna do even if nobody paid me. And the more apt question, “What would I do if I knew I couldn’t possibly fail?” Well, making comic books would defintely be at the top of that list.
Then today, one of the art directors I work with introduced me to a self-published comic from an artist she saw in Austin. The guy’s name is Kennon James and he’s a phenomenal illustrator. Not to mention, his concept is stellar. It’s called Imperial Lance and it’s all about what would have happened if Japan had won World War 2. Talk about fertile creative ground! Anyhow, seeing this guy’s work gave me yet another huge creative boost.
I can’t wait to get home to my drawing table and get back to work!
