My celebrity playlist

Posted 28 Nov 2006 in pop culture

Ok, so I’m no celebrity, but I’ve got a playlist like the rest of ‘em. Yep, Apple’s gonna be putting me on iTunes annnny day now.

Whatever. Here’s mine. In no particular order.

Track: Ol’ 55
Artist: Tom Waits
Album: Closing Time

This one bleeds the sadness and regret of illicit sex & romance. But I love this song because I discovered it at a point in my life when I was finally starting to wake up to the reality of my decisions and the potential to correct them.

Track: Bring Me To Life
Artist: Evanescence
Album: Fallen

This one will always hold a special place for me. It’s symbolic of when I first learned what it could be like to be unconditionally loved.

Track: Bawitdaba
Artist: Kid Rock
Album: Devil Without A Cause

I admire Kid Rock for combining rap with southern rock and keeping alive the outlaw feel of both. The whole album has a great, hardcore attitude. Makes me wanna kick someone’s ass.

Track: We Want A Rock
Artist: They Might Be Giants
Album: Flood

TMBG is a brilliantly quirky band playing “nerd rock.” I love how they combine bizarre lyrics with unsual instruments like accordions and autoharps. This one makes me smile, especially the bit about prosthetic foreheads.

Track: It’s All About To Change
Artist: Travis Tritt
Album: It’s All About To Change

This song shook me out of my married malaise and became my own personal anthem.

Track: Never Is A Promise
Artist: Fiona Apple
Album: Tidal

Apple’s husky vocals make these lyrics stir my soul. We all throw out words like “never” and “always” with such frivolity, and this song calls us on it.

Track: Sad But True
Artist: Metallica
Album: Metallica

This one’ll rock your ass off.

Track: Prince Charming
Artist: Adam and the Ants
Album: Prince Charming

A New Wave ode to originality and disdain for conformity.

Track: Ain’t That Lonely Yet
Artist: Dwight Yoakam
Album: This Time

A melancholy song that brims with personal strength.

Track: Hot For Teacher
Artist: Van Halen
Album: 1984

Back when they really were Van Halen, this one typifies their balls-out spirit (and irreverent humor). Eddie at his best.

Track: Still Loving You
Artist: Scorpions
Album: Love At First Sting

The Scorpions rock a ballad harder than anyone.

Track: I Don’t Wanna Be
Artist: Gavin DeGraw
Album: Chariot

A fresh, spunky declaration of self.

Track: Holiday
Artist: Green Day
Album: American Idiot

Although I don’t agree with their politics, I love their punk sound and sensibility. This song releases a lot of pent-up frustration and anger!

Track: What It Takes
Artist: Aerosmith
Album: Pump

Rock’s most underrated band. Tyler’s got one of the most exciting voices out there, no matter the tempo of the song.

Track: New York State Of Mind
Artist: Billy Joel
Album: Turnstiles

Always mellows me out. A peek inside the life of a young artist in the big city.

OK, music lover. What’s in your playlist?
