Oil pastels, day one

Phew, this is harder than I thought. But that’s typically how it goes whenever I try something new. I am a perfectionist at heart and want to master any given thing almost immediately. And, of course, it never works out that way. I have to scratch and claw for every bit of accomplishment.

But I always get what I want. And I will get this.

These oil pastels are much more waxy than I thought. I had figured they would be creamy and mix well, similar to oil paints. Perhaps the more expensive kind respond that way. Hrmph. Blending is much more crayon-like than I had hoped. So I don’t know if it’s the consistency of the pastels or perhaps due to the fact that I’m using them on canvas. Since I’ve not been taught how to use these, it’s all trial and error. Heavy on the error.

Oh well. It’s getting late and my back is killing me, so it’s time to stop for today. If nothing else, working against a dark background is good discipline for choosing bright colors and getting better at creating the illusion of light.

More to come…
