Inspired to create again

Today, traci and I went out to the Cottonwood Art Festival. It’s something I enjoy attending each year, as there are dozens (if not hundreds) of various artists from around the country, demonstrating all manner of artistic creations. Paintings in watercolor, gauche, acrylic, and oil as well as sculptures in wood, steel, and bronze. So much visual stimulation to take in! Just walking from booth to booth can be overwhelming after a while. But I find it exhilirating to see other artists who actually make a living from the style they’ve established.

paintingresized.jpg That’s the thing that I envy most. When an artist figured out a particular style and you can recognize their work, I think that’s the neatest thing! And it’s what kept me from a career as an artist. Whether I work in oils or pen & ink, my style tends to be one of extreme realism. And to me, that’s just not very remarkable. Anyone can do realistic illustration or painting. I know artists tend to be hyper-critical for the most part, and that’s just me tearing my own self down like I’ve done in the past. But yesterday, I found myself encouraged. I looked at several different painters’ work and began to piece together similarities between them. And I started thinking to myself, “I could do this.”

Swezy.jpgSo as soon as we got home, I headed over to the local art supply store and bought myself a few things. A small canvas, some black gesso to prime it, a roller to add texture to the under-layer, and some oil-based pastels (basically, it’s like doing oil painting, but using the paint in the form of crayons). The texture and the black color on the base should create some cool effects!

My first painting will be of two hearts. Yeah, it’ll be simple, but I plan on using some bright colors and having some fun getting back into a medium I haven’t touched in over 15 years.

More to come…
