Uptight parents get good teacher punished
Some people’s ignorance knows no bounds.
This one has me nearly speechless. But only nearly, luckily for you.
Teacher Punished After Field Trip Complaints
A school field trip to the Dallas Museum of Art may have cost a Frisco fifth-grade teacher her job. After some parents complained that their children saw nude sculpture and paintings, the school district decided to put teacher Sydney McGee on paid administrative leave until next spring. And, they’ve decided not to renew her teaching contract next year.
McGee says the school approved the field trip in advance, and parents were required to sign permission slips for their children.
McGee, who has 28 years of teaching experience, says she wanted to treat the children she’s taught at Fischer Elementary School since kindergarten with a special field trip. Four months ago, she took them to the museum.
A spokesman for the Dallas Museum of Art says in five years of school tours, there have never been any complaints. Last year, some 50,000 children visited the art museum.
It’s not clear which specific works of art raised the objections.
Frisco ISD officials say McGee’s punishment was over a variety of issues, some of which started before the field trip.
Did she molest any children? Use racial slurs? Perhaps introduce sex education to children at too young an age to be appropriate?
Nope, she took them to the Dallas Museum of Art. And they saw (brace yourselves), nekkid people! I kid you not. Them thar museum folks is got nekkid statues and pitchers. *can you hear my toothless southern accent?*
Now, I can understand that there are some people out there so stupid and ignorant as to honestly believe their 5th grader was harmed by seeing a naked body in a painting or sculpture. I totally disagree with it, but I know there are knuckleheads like that.
What stumps me is WHY THE SCHOOL IS DIGNIFYING THE COMPLAINT WITH OFFICIAL ACTION?!!!!! This is a 28-year teaching veteran! One who, until recently, had gotten all good reviews. And this is how we treat teachers who try to educate our children? It’s bad enough that the school put her on “administrative leave.” But there’s a lot more going on here. This woman is being blackballed by the small-minded bureaucracy in the Frisco school district.
“I was asked to come to the office by the assistant principal and Nancy went on and on for an hour about how I should have planned the trip more and previewed the museum first,” McGee said. She then told the principal that she did preview the museum, and as a compromise, offered that they not take the field trip the next year.
At this, McGee said that Lawson told her there might not be a next year, and that they would have to see how Dr. Debra Nelson, FISD assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and Dr. Linda Bass, assistant superintendent for human resources, would handle the matter.
She said the principal then told her that, in her opinion, McGee was “no longer Frisco material.”
After Lawson told her that she had received a parent complaint about the field trip, McGee remembered saying, “Can I talk to the parent and try to meet with her?’” to which Lawson reportedly responded that the damage had already been done.
The principal described the art work in question as an “abstract sculpture,” but nothing more. According to McGee, Lawson held a meeting with the fifth-grade teachers about the field trip without inviting her, which the art teacher was shocked by.
After this incident, McGee said that she was shunned at her campus.
“People won’t talk to me. I’m out working bus duty with paraprofessionals, which is fine, but I think there’s something deeper behind it,” she said.
Great way to treat a good teacher for 28 years of service.
The school board stopped short of terminating Ms. McGee’s contract Monday night. But after a closed-door session, Dr. Reedy said he would recommend that her contract not be renewed.
Sounds a lot like “fired” to me.
I’m not sure who’s got so much influence as to pull of something of this nature, but maybe either the parent in question or perhaps the principal is actually Marguerite Perrin (that raving lunatic from Trading Spouses).
