Convert from Islam to Christianity killed in Somalia
MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (ANS) — Somali Christian sources report that Ali Mustaf Maka’il, a 22-year-old college student and cloth merchant, who converted from Islam to Christianity eleven months ago, was shot and killed in the Manabolyo quarter of Mogadishu on September 7.

According to a report from The Barnabas Fund, quoting a Christian source inside Somalia, the gunman was loyal to the Union of Islamic Courts (ICU), the Islamist organization that took power in Mogadishu in early June 2006 and now controls much of southern Somalia.

The report states: “The gunman shot Ali in the back after he refused to join a crowd chanting Qur’an verses in honor of the lunar eclipse. (Solar and lunar eclipses are significant in Islam and are accompanied by special congregational prayers.) The ICU confiscated his body for 24 hours before delivering it to the grieving family.”

The Barnabas Fund says: “It seems that under the new Islamist rulers, who include hard-line jihadi elements, the tragic history of persecution and martyrdom for Somalia’s tiny Christian community is set to continue and most likely to worsen.”

The group reports that in July 2006 there were unconfirmed reports that three Christians had been shot and killed by Islamists as they returned home from a prayer meeting.

It adds: “In October 2005 an evangelist and house church leader, Osman Sheik Ahmed, was shot dead by Islamist radicals. Children of Christian Somali refugees in Kenya have been kidnapped by Muslim relatives and taken to Islamic institutions in Somalia for ‘rehabilitation.’ “

The Barnabas Fund explains that the leader of the ICU, Hassan Dahir Aweys, promised to implement shari’a in all areas he controls.

“According to shari’a, apostates (those who leave Islam for another religion), must be killed. ICU leaders have even threatened to kill as apostates Muslims who are lax in their prayers, claiming this is commanded by shari’a.

See, this is where I get confused. And since there are more and more Muslims who check this blog from time to time, I’d be curious to hear your feedback.

I hear from Muslims who say Islam really IS a peaceful religion. Ok, but what’s confusing is that Shar’ia law is based on the Qu’ran and demands these barbaric punishments. And it seems the goal of jihadists, and many “moderate” Muslims, is to establish a worldwide Caliphate, which, of course, is based on Shar’ia law. So what are non-Muslims to think when stuff like this keeps happening all around the world?

If it’s forbidden in Islam for Muslims to kill Christians, is Hassan Dahir Aweys not a real Muslim for commanding things that are supposedly forbidden in Islam?

Because when you have crazies like Jim Jones or David Koresh who claimed to be Christian, you’ll have pretty much the entire Christian community stand up and say, “Oh no, that nutball was no Christian. He was a cultist who perverted the Bible for his own selfish wishes. He was not a Christian.”

But I’m not seeing or hearing that kind of public reaction to Muslim violence urged by its leaders. I’m not seeing Imams who call for jihad being excommunicated or thrown out of the religion. And I see thousands of Muslims angrily protesting on a regular basis, promising subjugation and bloodshed for all non-Muslims.

Do you see my quandary here? Either the killing of apostates and non-Muslims is commanded in Shar’ia law or it isn’t. And either Shar’ia is true to Islam or it isn’t. But I hear both sides put forth on a regular basis by Muslims. Which makes it all to easy to overlook the horrors being carried out in the name of Islam.

So which is it?
